As per the title.

A lump was discovered a few weeks ago (now marble size) which today has been confirmed as Cancerous. The lump and surrounding tissue is being removed tomorrow. Sarah is distraught.

A little on the cat. 7-8 years old, no exact age as she is a Greek street rescue. No other signs of anything wrong. The lump is on he belly, near her front leg pit.

What are the odds of the op successfully ridding her of the wretched Cancer? How will we know if it has done so? What other routes may we need to take if not a success? Is there anything we can do to help her along/ help the odds?

If anyone can help it will be much appreciated, as we're not well educated around the matter.

Thank you both. S is now Googling the tea! So, after they remove it, is what you're saying that they send it off for testing? It was tested by injecting in to it last Friday. It's so unfair, I've honestly never met a cat with a lovelier temperament.

Edit to add, it's been confirmed as malignant already.

Do you know exactly what the tumour is? It sounds like they did a fine needle aspirate. It gives you a diagnosis but doesn’t necessarily mean it has ‘spread’. If you send it off to then lab after removal they can get a 100% diagnosis and a better prognosis. After the surgery you can stage tumours by taking aspirates of local lymph nodes. It depends on how far you want to go with it. If it has spread then chemo could be an option. At referral centres some do radiotherapy but it is expensive and needs lots of separate anaesthetics.
We'll go as far as needs be for this girl. We'd sell the car to fund it if needs be. It may have been bought up with S and the vet, but I don't know the type it is. Out of interest Tom, what is your background, are you a vet?

Thank you Moorx. I'll update the thread tomorrow, when there's more to report. She'll be with her vet friend (Aby) throughout. She's in good hands.

We've had a call from them, it's been removed, we're collecting her at 5. I'll know more after then.

She's OK. She's relaxed now, but was very out of it, and a bit wired from the drugs when we got her home. She was in a bad mood too, she nearly killed one of the dogs when he approached her!

Back at the vets on Saturday, for a quick check, and the lump should be back early next week after being analysed.

She's not so happy now. She's been licking her wound (naturally) but it needs to dry out ASAP. Our answer. Baby-grow.

How is she doing?
She's doing well, thanks. At the weekend she was popped back to the vets for a check, and it's amazing how well her wound had healed in just a matter of days, they were very pleased with how well it was doing. She's back in on Thursday for another check, and to possibly, if they feel apt, have her stitches out. They may by then have the findings from the lab back too.

Other than that, she's sleeping more than usual (if that were possible!) which we suspect is an effect of the post op meds.

Thanks for asking.

To all who took the time to post. We are now 4 months on and I can happily report that there has so far been no comeback of any new lumps or any other signs that we need to be worried about. Keeping our fingers crossed, as she is the loveliest mannered cat that either of us has ever known.

I really envy you as you have hope.

My parrot has an aggressive and invasive skin cancer. I was told by two avian vets that not much can be done as it is on the birds back by the wing's joint, they believe that if it didn't penetrate the bone yet it will happen in the near future. Also, as the lumps are over relatively large area even if they operate they can't see how the wound can be closed.

I am completely destroyed and find my self in tears when I just think of her. When this one goes I am not sure what to do with the other.
You have my sincere sympathies

Condolences.

I'd love an African Grey, but at my age the knowledge that it would outlive me is off putting.

Lovely boy. A barber I used years ago had a similar one in the shop. She had to take it home when it learnt to swear at customers laugh

Our little one eyed Greek princess has a very similar to last time lump on her lower belly. It seems it may be back, praying not so. If anyone doesn't deserve it, it's her. As per the PH thread, Cancer is a fking fker. Huge fingers crossed at this end cry She's made of tough stuff, stay strong baby girl.

You never said what type of cancer it is? do you know?
Apologies, only just seen this. Soft tissue sarcoma, AKA skin cancer. Apparently it's quite a rare strain. Keeping fingers crossed that the lump is scar tissue, or infected scar tissue, rather than the big C, S fears it feels exactly like what she found last time, but only time will tell.

Finances are quite strained (think covid) but we do need to get her to the vets ASAP. S is waiting for payday, within this week.

Maybe worth seeing a herbal vet, to see if there's anything they can offer. Try AP Vets see if they can help.
Thanks, we'll do a little research on this. Do you know that AP are a herbal/holistic vet?
