Which one do people prefer, and why? Family member is asking which one would be better to fly from as she's planning a trip to Italy next year, but has never flown before so wants it to be as straightforward and hassle free as possible. Forget travel to/from the airport/parking/etc, as she'll be travelling on public transport from London so no significant differences (ie. both have regular, fast, direct services).

I've flown from Heathrow a few times recently, but only once from Gatwick and that was about 10 years ago, so don't know what it's like these days. I was planning on going back to her and saying to simply go with whichever option has the best value and most convenient flights, but thought I'd get the opinions of PHers who are probably more knowledgeable than me first.

Thanks for the responses. thumbup She's not one for shopping (as she's tight with money hehe) which also rules out LCY.

I agree LHR T5 is probably 'nicer' (but noting everyone's comments about delays), but I think she's best off going with price/convenience.

Tight yet lives in London
Indeed, should move to Yorkshire. Doesn't she know it's against the law to live in London and not chuck money about..?

Seriously OP, just go for whichever airport has the best deal and most convenient times. For a first time flyer it won't make any difference.
She actually lives near Leicester, but will be staying overnight at a friends in London (I said she was tight hehe)

(It's also quite possible she'll want to take homemade sandwiches).
