Best USA Credit Card?

Off to USA/Canada for 3 weeks in January.
Last time I went I used my Virgin Atlantic Amex and got absolutely bum raped with charges for daring to use my card in the country they brought me too......
I understand there are some card companies that are a bit more forgiving, but a quick google didn't find me them.
Anyone know whats best?
I don't really like cash, as I loose things too easily!
