Just discovered Costco.....
Discussion
After having various friends and family rave about it and also seen some references on here to various items I have eventually registered and have just returned from the first excursion....
Some cracking bargins and some stuff that was really not that great but have to say was pretty impressed with the place overall and some things like balancing from £8.40 a wheel and free nitrogen inflations for tyres seems a decent service for members.

Is it still for selected people or can commoners now join? My Dad used to have a card because he worked at a bakery (?) but he let it expire. I only used to tag along so I could buy pizza from the deli.
Selected professions can join as individuals either that or you have to have a company. FloppyRaccoon said:
I find it near impossible to go in without buying something. I never realise how many things I need until I walk around there.
We only went in to do the membership thing get our pictures taken and pick up the cards, oh and thought we would pick up some dishwasher tablets and diet coke plus have a wander around and get the lay of the land.... £850 and change in two trollies later we are trying to work out how to get it all in the car!!The fresh pizza was awesome I have to say!

Costco's tyres are expensive, I think the pizza is full of oil but you can buy a large hot dog and drink for £1.50. The meat is great and if you have space buy stuff that will not go off, bog rolls, washing stuff, shampoos etc, all much cheaper than Tesco etc. When I am making a large purchase I normally check Costco to see if they have it and if so it will almost always be cheaper. They have a car trolley jack too.
I have to disagree on the Pizza, we had one of the large square fresh ones with chicken, peppers etc and there was no oil really at all and it was clearly made with good quality ingredients. Yes I think the 3t Trolley Jack was £60 or £70 I think, looked very substantial.

I got a free membership offer, so went along. Don't think I'll renew, charging for entry is taking the piss and prices aren't all that good.
Back to Makro it is, then.
I have to say a fair few of the prices were pretty cheap and I was using ShopSavvy on my phone on the way round and I can honestly say with a degree of certainty I have saved the cost of my membership on the first trip. Not sure how that would compare to Makro in fairness but I am a happy bunny.Back to Makro it is, then.

Oh look... I used to work for a school... Apparently that means I can register... I'm also a Chartered Engineer (but probably not of the sort they want).
Hello Card
Do it Switch... there are some real discounts to be had... some from our trip today, 24 pack of diet coke was £5 and change, 12 pack of San Pellegrino for £7 and change, Cloudy Bay £15 a bottle, Faustinio 1 <£10 a bottle, Napolina Tomato Puree equivalent of 45p a tube, Peroni 24 pack was around £17.Hello Card
All seemed good value to me.

Price isn't the be all and end all quality has a part to play, and I can honestly say the quality of meat and frozen foods is top notch
The Rib of Beef we bought for Sunday dinner tomorrow looked good and was good value per KG so I will let you know about the quality tomorrow afternoon!mybrainhurts said:

Charging for entry? Surely it's only membership fee and not pay per trip?otherman said:
B and Q have 18 packs for £5.49, same price, no membership fee!
Not that I'm knocking Costco they do have some good value lines, but I dropped out because I spent so much there. Bought stuff I would never have bought if I hadn't gone in, and paying a membership fee for the privaledge.

Costco is a compelte waste of time and energy. Not to mention the "membership" fee. I had a membership for a year, but I have let it lapse.
So far as food/non-food groceries are concerned, they have nothing I need that can't get in Lidl or Aldi in much smaller quantities for the same or better price.
The clothing and electronics is no better value than shopping on the internet.
It's massive, takes a bloody age to get around, and the trollies are rubbish.
The tyres/fitting are dearer than my local indie garage.
Pointless place.
Thought the whole point of it is that its cash and carry... aka buy lots and save money, not treat the thing like a supermarket and buy normal amounts of things. So far as food/non-food groceries are concerned, they have nothing I need that can't get in Lidl or Aldi in much smaller quantities for the same or better price.

My parents use the Makro equivalent and if they buy 2+ months supply everything is cheaper, so unless you can prove those statements with examples as everyone else is saying it different.
Electronic/clothing I always inspect first then try an buy online next, but its the food items Im querying.
Just been back again today and stocked up on yet more goods... Definitely some good bargins again.
The Cloudy Bay was on offer again today and slightly lower price of £14 and change inc VAT, Laurrent Perrier Rose £32 in VAT and more Peroni @ £17 for the case. Also got some fillet steak this time and it does look cracking and we are having that later.

Could be the 'bundle pack' which makes the difference?
Happy to concede if that it the case, although the TV comes as standard with 2 glasses from other retailers. Can't see what else is included in the photo.Costco do source their stuff from all over the world though, so the spec and value-added elements can often be different to mainstream UK retailers.

worth going for the u.s spec parking spaces ...can have 2 large cars park next to one another and the door wouldnt touch if you slung it wide open
... As most of the clientele and the fourteen family members they bring shopping do.Re: slightly dog-eared s-classes: the clientele have _very_ dog-eared s-classes
Being a Leicester chap your hypothesis might hold water.
But I can say after over a year it is smashing value when used right, I now use it almost like a supermarket as it is so local and the quality and value is for the most part on fresh produce alone exceptional.
The amount of parties I have catered via CostCo in the last 12 months - many and it has been spot on.
All round, still a yay vote from Heppers.
