Sorry people, it is seriously that time again.

A pretty vicious low pressure north of Scotland brings a chance of snow in the Scottish mountains next weekend!!!

Have read on another car forum that snow and cold is a possibility for mid October times. Any truth pug and schmalex?
Very difficult to get this right, and it's only trends that can be forecast, but with little accuracy.

Current thougths are temps to be below average - but so is rainfall. High pressure to dominate. Frost a possibility - and we've seen snow in October before (I have a picture of snow in Northants on the M1 in October from 4 or 5 years ago).

That's ok then - forecasts have changed and the Scottish mountains will remain at 5oC, so no snow!

As you were, back to the summer thread please smile

Yep - every long distance forecast I read is going for a harsh winter.

Mind you, no one forecast such a good summer hehe

Autumn has arrived. It is going to be GRIM up north on Sunday, and next week is likely to see frequent rain and windy spells.

When are we likely to get any real idea of the winter ahead - as in mid/long term forecasts for winter?
There's been a lot of long range forecasts pointing at a brutal winter.

But then again, many experts expected September to be relatively warm and calm...

It's Grabbiele you need to worry about more next weekend - and I suspect Humberto will appear at some point...

Are we expecting a hurricane or something? Certainly seems like it. Very strong winds from the WSW.
That's next weekend, Humberto by name! This is just a deep low pressure between Scotland and Iceland. 100mph winds on top of Cairngorm.

Ok Puggit & Schmalex, time to put your cocks on the blocks... wink

Lets have your individual forecasts using what little info you have for this winter.
eek

I'm going to pitch for a winter like the last one. Many short lived snow events, some major and some minor. A constant battle between the warm Atlantic and cold continent. So not a deep-freeze winter, and not a warm wet one. A winter to frustrate those living in the South West hehe

I've found a great free little app - available on Apple and Android called 'Rain Alarm'. It does exactly what it says on the tin and gives a push notification when some rain arrives in your vicinity.

I'm off to get the washing in!

(works for snow too)

benjj - there have been a lot of predictions for a severe winter in the amateur weather world.

Articles like this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/paulhudson/posts/Rare-s... are also fanning the flames. The Sun provides every bit of energy on this planet, and has a huge effect on us. If we are truly experiencing another Dalton minimum, then it's time for every single one of us to invest in winter tyres!

Long range forecast from Netweather.tv: http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=longrang...

Northern blocking currently in place and forecast to dominate the weather from now until Christmas - this is the pattern that normally means cold and snow in winter...
