Modern board/card games
Discussion
Anyone else finding loads of awesome new games to play?
At home since Christmas we've discovered Carcasonne, Battlestar Galactica, Exploding Kittens, Cards against Humanity and have just bought Disappearing Island from the new game/comic/coffee shop nearby.
Seems the last few years has seen a big rise in new, high quality games pitched at all levels, ages, and tastes. We (two adults, two pre teen children) are loving the variety and improved dynamics compared to classics like Risk/Monopoly/Game of Life etc.
Who else is getting addicted to a quick game of an evening?

Is Disappearing Island the Forbidden Island?
I have a German copy of that if so. The cooperative one where the island floods?
Sorry, yep! Just played our first game - cheated a little to help the kids (honest!) yet still lost... I have a German copy of that if so. The cooperative one where the island floods?
Enjoyable though, our first cooperative game and it's a nice change.
Cheers for the suggestions.
Dupoint - not played any GW, although I did buy Dark Vengeance when it first came out as I wanted to give painting a try... You've just reminded me it's still in the garage so will dig it out and give it a go.
At the time, it seemed a bit too geeky/involved, however having looked through the BSG boardgame (not had a play yet due to numbers/time) we've become a bit more adventurous with the more complex mechanics.
The one thing that stands out for me is the production quality. All the games I've mentioned have superb quality cards/boards/tokens etc. It really is a noticeable step up from the 'traditional' games...
Few 2 player games of Forbidden Island last night - still not managed to beat the game yet which is quite enjoyable. Oh has decided she wants Pandemic to be next on the list.

I'll second Uno, only card game my two still play from their younger years. Quick and easy too so no worries about attention span.
Trivial Pursuit - we just bought the family edition as we realised our version was made the same year I was born! Two sets of questions, one for adults one for children. Would say that the kids questions are still pitched at 8+ though.
New mousetrap, whilst no where near as satisfying (or long-winded) as the original, is a lot of fun with younger players... Frustration is still a winner with the kids too.

@Sway - Carcassonne, you do actually build the board, as the pieces are jigsaw'd. TTR, you have a traditional board that you fold out with marked out routes that you claim depending on your target routes.
As, it is different then. Not jigsaw pieces, but each turn involves placing a board tile in a spot that 'works' according to the design. You've then got a limited number of pieces you can claim different types of landscape with, but usually have to complete the feature (such as a road or castle) to score the points). I like it, as it's effectively a sophisticated version of dominoes.
Steve Evil - gutted I didn't pick up a copy of Pandemic Legacy when I was Christmas shopping...
One question, you mention sticking stuff on the board/tearing cards up - are these reversible changes?! Otherwise you get a single 'season' then bin the game?
Ticket to Ride Europe just been ordered. Pandemic and a couple of highly rated Carcassonne expansions are in my wishlist.

The river expansion is brilliant - we play it in two different ways. Sometimes we follow the rules, and place meeple as we're placing river tiles. Other times we place the river and then start the game as normal. Works well either way, but different dynamic between the two approaches.
Forbidden Island has been great the last few days - kids have been playing it whilst on half term, and we've normally fitted in a couple of games as a family each night.
It's different, and brilliant, playing cooperatively - marked comparison to 'normal' games. Bloody tough too, so you're on your toes all the ways through.

We had friends over for most of yesterday, after a roast lunch the games collection was raided...
Carcassonne a bit with all - from 4yo to 35. Same for Forbidden Island.
Kids wanted to do some other stuff so we broke out Battlestar Galactica for the first time. After an hour of getting stuff setup we realised none of us had a bloody clue what was going on, so back in the box it went and Exploding Kittens came out!
Having now watched a couple of YouTube vids, I think I've got it.
Why on earth don't the companies relating these complex mechanic games use the greater clarity of video to explain how it works with the 20 page manual held in reserve?

Went into my local games shop yesterday - bought regular Pandemic, and pre ordered Legacy for £45.
Then bought a coffee and had a cracking game of Forbidden Desert with the owner of the store.
Pandemic a huge hit - three games last night, I'm certain my OH and daughter will be playing it today as daughter is off school ill.

Top end of North Street - it's fairly new, called (imaginatively enough!) Comics, Games and Coffee.
Owen, the boss dude, is brilliant. Doesn't sugar coat things, but gives good advice and is always helpful - even with my two kids. Recommended.
He said he should be getting stock in a week, and the £45 is preorder only, so get in there quick.
Off topic (ish), but always happy to meet up with fellow PHers for a pint and natter.

Superb, I'm at Goodwood all day tomorrow for the members meeting testing so I'll make time to pop in and preorder.
And likewise about a pint. I think there's quite a few members local but all the meets are in the new forest it seems.

I'll drop you a PM - mental this weekend but sure we can sort something soonish. There are quite a few locals, but you're right, all the meets seem to be either Hampshire or up on the Surrey border.
Now there's the start of a good idea...

I popped in today what a great little shop! I'd love to own somewhere like that. And a great bunch of guys he was hoping his delivery would arrive today however after popping back in this afternoon he has added me to his list and was happy to offer to post it to me, but being 20/30min away I'm happy to keep popping in.
On a plus note he had the second expansion for carcassonne so I've picked that up and will have to ask if he can get hold of the other expansions as I'd prefer to shop with him than online.

May have to arrange a meet up there!
Which Carcassonne expansion did you get?
I won't be able to pop in until the weekend. Came home just know to find the missus and kids playing Pandemic, so timing could be good once they've got stock.
