it's that great time of year when the locals disappear, we get a lie in every day & finish early.

Seriously for those who are observing, best wishes.

What does amaze me is the closeness that Jewish and Muslim faiths are in their beliefs and laws, yet hate each other

Would be interested on your take, or anyone elses on it.
Not trolling, just trying to understand Islam better
.... add Christianity to that list. All are Abrahmic religions. They came from the same basic point. The Bible, Torah & Quran share come stories, people, places incidents. And yes that include Jesus/Isa. The similarities are greater than the differences to be honest.

Qatar is very friendly most of the time but at this time of the year people do go out of their way to be extra nice. There are tents in many locations where locals feed anyone and everyone who chooses to visit at sunset too, feel free to pop in to one of them.
& not at all unusual in the Gulf. Contrary to what most would believe. Courtesy, politeness & hospitality are the norm, however these things are being washed away by the younger generations from what I have seen.

As a teacher in a private school for locals I get to meet many of the younger generation as well as their parents and even grandparents, and unfortunately parenting is very lacking and left to drivers and nannies, at least in Qatar anyway. As the nannies and drivers live in fear of being sacked and not being able to provide for their families back home, many of the children never get to hear 'NO' or are disciplined, they have no idea what courtesy or politeness is.

Many schools for locals are run by expats who live in fear of being sacked too and don't enforce basic rules so they learn nothing about the basics in school either, leading to what you see today.
I'd tend to agree with that observation. Talking to Kuwaiti's there is a feeling of frustration at some of the attitudes you notice, but the feeling is nobody is strong enough to say enough. In Kuwait due to recent history things are a little different, above a certain age (those that lived through the invasion), there seems to be a greater retention of traditional niceties. As one of the guys put it "We know we have so much but are grateful every day because we know it can be taken away literally overnight, as it was." Yes I see some ttish behavior, but also a great amount courtesy & politeness.

Anyhow I'm diverting from the original point of my thread so I'll leave it there.

As an atheist I'd just like to apologise for the fundamentalist athiests that make the rest of us look like dicks.

It's just a small minority but they are very vocal and share the same mindset as fundamentalists of any religion they proclaim to be superior to.

Never understood why pigs & not chickens?
Both animals often eat excrement.
I read once that it was also down to the fact the pork hosts a lot of parasites, which are harmful to humans. In colder northern climes the parasites die off, but in the warmer southern climes of the mid-east they survive longer in the dead host. Hence the big north/south divide with pork.

I've been to Dubai a few times visiting my sister and I'm going back there later this year. I know of at least 2 churches there, I visited one of them with my Christian wife. It's just a matter of buying a piece of land, applying to the government for permission then building your church. But then, it's down to the individual countries and who's in charge. In Saudi for example, its permitted to be a Christian and pray but they don't allow churches.
There is a cathederal & a few churches here in Kuwait. The same in Bahrain. There's even a synagogue in Bahrain, that the Emir offered to fund the preservation of. Plenty of synagogues in Iran

Serious question... is there any short/medium term damage in exercising quite so hard while fasting / not taking on water?
Never experienced anything. You have to remember that professional athletes including footballers and runners have the same constraints, not that I am anywhere close to that level.
I don't see the problem with the fasting bit, but I'm sure in the wrong conditions dehydration could be a short term problem.
