Lift buttons and jews
Discussion
So last night (Friday night) I walked home to my apartment. In front of me was a group of smartly dressed Jewish men obviously just back from their Friday night sinagogue service. We walk towards the lifts, me following. When they get to the lifts instead of pressing the button, they just stand there. Then it dawns on me. They are not allowed to press lift buttons! I am normally a reasonably polite chap but I decide that, fk it, I am not pandering to religious nonsense when it is not even my religion by pressing it for them. I wonder how long we are all going to stand there, when (dammit) the lift door opens and someone comes out. They pile in, me following. Again, they do not press the button to their floor. I press my button and the doors start to close. One of them puts his foot in the door to stop it closing, and calls the concierge over. The concierge presses their button for them and up we go.
Two questions - what would they have done if I had been a bit quicker and the lift doors closed before they got the concierge to press their button, and - how did they take the lift down on the way out?

So not; ‘live and facilitate the bizarre lifestyle of others’ then...
In a similar circumstance would you not just say "what floor, chaps?"garythesign said:

In respect of the second question, I expect they took the lift down before the Sabbath had come in.A sub-text to my OP is not to be anti-Semitic, anti-Jewish or even anti-religion, but anti daft things that people do for no good reason, especially when they are impractical, and more especially when others are required to go along with the daft ideas, or at least to keep a straight face.

Morality existed long before the recent (in human terms) religions decided to write them down.
Got any evidence for that rather sweeping statement?Take the case of Pacific Islanders - cannibalism, infanticide and murder was the norm until they were converted in the 19th century by Christian missionaries. Where was their morality?

We recently went to a safari park for a day out and there were a lot of Jews knocking about. My observations include:
They do like to wear black.
They are a bit dim, as entering the lion enclosure with your windows down isn't the smartest thing to do (the keeper shouted after them but not sure if they heard him!)
One of them had set up a small tent (like a portaloo size thing) that I couldn't work out the need for?
Maybe it was a portaloo. They do like to wear black.

Probably fair to say that, like any other identifiable group, Jews are not a monolithic block, some will be pretty dim, but the group has won about 20% of the Nobel prizes ever awarded, so...
If we accept (as I guess we do) that Jews are over-achievers as measured by numbers of Nobel winners, is not the flip side to ask why other groups are under-achievers? It is not as if Jews have had a particularly easy ride either (especially in lifts on Fridays). Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
