I've got formal coats and a shooting coat, but nothing in between. I need a smart casual coat that isn't too cumbersome but warm enough when it turns parky.

Anyone else eyeing up the possibilities? If so what are you thinking (it might give me some ideas!).

I suspect there will be varying views on the definition of the term 'formal' in this context.

I will admit in advance to having something of a fetish for overcoats and I will be doing my best to avoid buying one this year.
While I would be unlikely to wear one of my better overcoats with jeans, I would be even less likely to be wearing jeans in the first place.

That said, I think what you are wearing at any given time can 'de-formalise' most coats quickly enough? Would depend somewhat on colour and style of course. I favour wide lapel, back belted, double breasted myself.
Most modern coats aren't very heavy or warm in fact. Not when compared to overcoats of just 60-70 years ago.

Can you give us a visual clue as to what you see as too formal for (I assume) smart casual?
I tend to wear Crombie type coats for formal wear. Wool, single breasted, just above the knee.

I want something parka-like, but light and probably with a drawstring waist. The North Face does some nice shaped stuff, but I am wary that they have become a bit chavvy.

Yep, I picked up a black peacoat from All Saints in the spring a few years ago for £125 reduced from about £250, apart from needing a dry clean and the sleeve linings looking a bit worse for wear, it's still in a great condition; I love it, its warm, stylish, can be worn smart, casual or can't be arsed, whatever!

They are timeless.
I don't think one would be warm enough, because they don't repel any water and don't do up to the neck.

Bought one these last week.

Nearly £500 off.

Absolutely fantastic coat. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Also comes in grey if you prefer that.
Looks excellent value. I do wonder whether it;s a bit heavy for my requirement.

You can take the inner coat out of it completly so it's then basically a luxury unlined parka. You can also wear the inner coat by itself if you wish. It's very versatile.

The quality is off the scale. So many pockets. You can detach the goggles etc. Comes with a torch!

I've been a fan of MA.STRUM for a while. They do some cracking stuff but hand on heart this the best coat I've ever owned. Knocks the st out of Stone Island or CP Company.
If I start working in mountain rescue I'll take another look.

If you like a country look and don’t want the waxed look, Dubarry have a nice range: https://www.dubarryboots.com/ballyfin-men-s-tweed-...
Yes, I've looked at them. A bit country for my taste.

They work on limited run manufacturing in Manchester, so it is best to register and look at their Being Made page;

I quite like the look of this Musto:

https://www.musto.com/en_GB/corsica-br1-long-jacke...

Musto seems to me to be a brand that isn't making a statement and the products I've seen tend to be well made. Tell me I am wrong someone.

Very plain. Quite the opposite to Gamefaces jacket that you'd see in a Guy Ritchie film biggrin
Yeah mine's awesome. That Musto is something my grandfather might wear.
I seem to recall my GREAT grandfather wore something like yours.

Could that be one which would be too hot for practical uses?

That’s what I want, a coat that keeps me warm sat watching football on a freezing cold night in winter.
Just don't walk to the stadium. biggrin

This is very true.

I have recently been starting to wear a short sleeved base layer under my regular clothes which makes all the difference. A decent short sleeve merino wool base layer from Go Outdoors is my recent 'go-to' at the moment and I expect this'll continue until spring! This means I don't need to throw on a massive coat and I can wear "nicer fashionable" clothes without getting as cold.

I only have a small collection so far but my coats/jackets so far consist of:

2014 Barber 'Greatcoat' which I chuck on most days. Ideal for mild winter/spring/autumn.

2017 Napapijri Skidoo Parka for the proper grim cold days. Cost £450ish but it came in very useful when I went to Iceland in February. It's heavy but warm.

Last month I bought this Italian Leather Jacket which I have been wanting for a couple years- I finally pulled the trigger. Today, 12 degree's in the morning taking the dog out (usually I'd put on a jumper and wear my Barbour coat) but with just a wool base layer, a plain white tshirt and this jacket, I was perfectly fine and it meant I could show it off smile

The only item I feel I'm missing is a wool coat of some sort. I love the look of the McNair merino mountain shirt posted earlier in this thread.
Is that Barbour wax? I like the shape, but wax is an anachronism. I don't like it.

No, it's not a proper waxed Barbour. It's water resistant though.
It's also not available!

Got this last week, in the sale, Pretty Green, was only £69.00

It looks good value and I am sure it looks good on you, but I still cannot quite get my head around how PG is still dining out on Liam Gallagher's look circa 1997.

New coat arrived yesterday.

I say new, its the same as my old coat but in a different colour.

Carhartt Siberian Parker, previous one was in Maroon, this one is navy blue. Best jacket I've ever owned and if it's not broke don't fix it! I've been up a mountain wearing just a t-shirt under this coat and been comfortably warm. Last one has lasted 6 years so far, and is still perfectly fine for walks and such but its a bit faded and a little scruffy now (might try dying it back to red with rit dye scratchchin)

Old one:

New one:

Think they're discontinued these days so quite hard to come across, used to retail at around £250-300, got this latest one new (with tags) on ebay for £145.
I prefer your new one.

Looks like a good choice. I think some of their coats stray into the realms of mad arctic survival wear don't they?

Rather than start another thread I thought I'd piggy back off a long running one.

Any suggestions on something all-year but with a bit of winter warmth?

Are Musto still any good?

I find myself slightly shocked what even normal jackets appear to cost yikes
I have a Musto country coat which is nicely made if not especially warm (though not necessarily meant to be). I have a sailing jacket from them too which is very good.

I rate them and would buy more from them. But they are are not a go to for smart clothing.
