A company of funeral directors is offering a new service. Daily Telegraph Business section today https://tinyurl.com/yd244wpr It may be behind a pay wall.

Instead of the normal funeral service this company - Pure Cremation https://www.purecremation.co.uk/ will cremate the body and give you the ashes. There is normally no service, no funeral director, hearses, following cars, or any of that stuff.

You have the ashes to dispose of as you think fit and you can hold a memorial service at a time and place of your choosing. It's much cheaper, around £1,195 for the basic plan.

It seems a good idea, in principle, to me. I have no connection with the company.

This is not a new idea.

This company: https://www.fairpricefunerals.co.uk/costs have been offering this sort of service for several years.
Yes, there are a number of companies offering a similar type service. Although the Fair Price Funeral people seem to charge an extra £1,000!

They quote £949.00.

Then why does it cost £1299.00 if it's in a Funeral Plan?

Great idea, but why does it cost £1200 to chuck a body in the oven?
Well, of course it doesn't. £515.00 in Hanworth, was it?

https://www.swmcrematorium.gov.uk/our-services/

If you can get the body to the crem, get one of your mates to do the service, that is all you need to pay.

It puts it all in perspective, doesn't it?

Parents spent most of the last 15 years travelling around in a house-bus, with parental consent, sister & I plan a viking funeral for them. I'll drive the bus down the beach, she'll start the fire. Parents happy, no thieving funeral costs by those who prey on people in times of loss. biggrin
Good idea.

What could possibly go wrong?
