I’ve just popped into the local Sainsbury’s and there was a pretty young thing at the checkout in front of me.

At first I wondered what the marks on her face were before realising that they were really badly done large tattoos all over her forehead, her temples and down her cheeks.

Similarly, there is a mother of a child at my daughters school. Not my usual cup of tea, (a bit barbie girl), but pretty enough. She has what looks to be home made tattoos all over her face, and what I think is supposed to be a large rat on one of her cheeks.

If someone wants a tattoo, that’s up to them. But I’m left wondering what possesses an other pretty young lady to have crappily done tattoos on their faces? It’s not like they can be easily covered up.

Or am I just getting old confused

IMO, if someone wants a tattoo, that’s up to them. It’s up to them if they want that tattoo on their arms, on their arse or on their face. Their body, their choice.

The point that I was trying to make was, why?

Neither of these two women had what could be considered by any stretch of the imagination to be nice looking face tattoos, (they looked like a child had scribbled on their faces), although I appreciate that the aesthetics of something are subjective, but I struggle to believe that they could have looked at their face tattoos and thought, “yeah, I look amazing !”

They must know that they’ve drastically reduced their opportunities in both the job market and the dating game, which still begs the question, ‘why?’

Self loathing? Self harm? Some sort of a mental illness?

I’m genuinely confused as to why these otherwise pretty young ladies would do this?

I am yet to see one that I think "oh that looks nicer than if you did not". But the bottom line is people are free to choose.
Yep, I totally agree. If it’s not agains the law and it isn’t hurting anyone, folk can do whatever the hell they like.

That wasn’t the gist of my post though. I’m more wondering why these girls would actually do this and think it’s a great idea?

I’m not singling you out here Jas. Several other posters have made similar comments to yours. It’s just that yours was the most recent of these comments.

Afraid not old boy frown I didn’t consider it to be good form to walk up to random women and take photos of them. I’d rather not end up on some sort of special register.

Complete tosh, but I'd expect that from a psychoanalyst, which "should be viewed as a crutch" to avoid doing a real job.

I have tattoos because I like them, not on my face because I don't personally want them there, and I'm aware of the prejudices some people have.

Meanwhile, you could equally say buying a ridiculous over powered penis-extension car is also "a pyschic crutch aimed to repair a crippled self image, inspire hope, keep noxious emotions at bay and reduce the discrepancy between the individual and his aspirations"
If I were to be perfectly honest, I’d have to agree with the highlighted paragraph. The same could be said of clothes, watches, houses, even holidays. Anything status symbol related. And yes, if I were to be 100% honest, then every material object that I own is, to some degree, a psychic crutch.

Why do we buy nice things? For lots of different reasons, but deep down I suspect that for all of us one of those reasons is so that others know that we can afford those nice things.

Maybe they want to ward off creepy old internet perverts.

Shouldn't really matter what they look like.

Their aim might be to remove the wolf whistles, the sleezy comments or the sexist remarks on how attractive they are etc.
I think the last time I heard anyone wolf whistling was back in the 90’s.

As for sexist comments about how nice someone looks, is it better to tell someone how awful they look? Is it sexist if a woman tells a man that he looks good?

Sorry, but I just don’t buy into the myth that paying someone a compliment is offensive.

the concept of conciously buying stuff so others can see your "success" is pretty lame and definitely stinks of ASW tendancies.

Subconciously there may well be a "need" for people to feel liked or respected and "tokens" of wealth like a nice car on the drive etc may meet that need.

Society is very materialistic in that respect so even if its not deliberate, it would be foolish to think it doesn't have an impact on people deeper down.
Which is the point that I was trying to make.

If I buy a nice watch, 95%+ of the reason for the purchase is made up by liking the design, admiration for the brand and various other reasons. But there is still that 1%-5% of essentially wanting to show off.

Of course I wouldn’t expect most people to admit to such things, but that doesn’t make it untrue for others.

Have you seen the price of a decent tattoo?
Nope. I honestly haven’t got a clue.

How much would a full sleeve cost? I’d guess there must be 20 hours work that goes into it, plus ink, plus needles, plus overheads, plus profit margin.

£3000 ?

Perhaps the first step towards clarity might be to think about why you still refer to women as pretty young things in 2021?
Ok.... “an ugly, old, non-gender binary being”

Is that better?

Does me describing an attractive young lady as an attractive young lady honestly offend you?

That's not what you said though.

Don't you see the difference between referring to someone as a 'young lady', and a 'thing'?
No. I don’t.

Same as I wouldn’t be offended, or pretend to be offended if a woman described a handsome young bloke as a ‘stud’, or a ‘hunk’ or ‘a bit of a dish’.

There’s three women in my household, (70’s, 30’s and early teen). I’ve just carried out a quick straw poll and none of them would be or would have been offended if a fella had referred to any of them as a “pretty young thing”.

I'll move beyond it to get back to topic

Good on the OP for taking the time to ask the women in his life about whether pretty young thing was in and of itself offensive to them. However whether it was or wasn't might not be the point, in the context of the question though.

Fully accepting that there was no intended malice in the OP's original post and that he thinks it is fine for anybody to do what they want.

Using the phrase pretty young thing dehumanised and sexualised The Thing. Regardless of intent, on reflection was this a nice or indeed a moral thing to do? Yes? Fine, we'll agree to disagree.

If not, can we move to the next stage and accept that this woman also doesn't owe you her prettiness?

If it is reasonable for her not to have to make herself look pretty for you (and everything that implies), then it's also reasonable that she can do whatever she likes with her own body.

We both come back to the same conclusion; that she can do whatever she wants. However the thinking behind it might be a little different.

It's why some pretty girls get face tattoos. Ugly girls too. They don't feel obliged to confirm to other people's idea of what is pretty and/or acceptable. I got there in the end Popeyewhite biggrin

If you really want to blow your mind... If you accept the concept that she doesn't owe you her prettiness, have a reread of the title of this thread and think about (again accepting that you meant no offence) all of the ingrained thinking the led to the implication that she did.

You could almost call it <trigger warning> patriarchal privilege eek

For other posters; that's not about offence/snowflakes/gammons. Simply a challenge to how you think about things.
Ok........

Perhaps you are over thinking things a little here. Looking for problems where there are none to be found.

If a woman, a man, or a non-gender binary, shape-shifting, multi spirit kangaroo wishes to have their face tattooed that is entirely up to them. Their body, their choice. I thought I had already made that point perfectly clear several times?

You state that “this women doesn’t owe me her prettiness”. That’s correct. She doesn’t. But it’s highly likely that she’ll owe her prettiness to someone.

That someone could be her children, her husband or partner, and also to herself.

We’ve already clarified that having facial tattoos vastly restricts ones ability to find employment. Sure, she might be in a steady, well paid, non customer facing role at the moment, but what’s to say she won’t get laid off tomorrow?

If for whatever reason she breaks up with her partner tomorrow, by having facial tattoos she’s vastly reducing the amount of suitors who would be interested in her in the future.

But of course, her body, her choice. Just because I think that her actions are foolish, it doesn’t mean that she has no right to make those foolish decisions. She can do whatever the hell she wants.

Additionally I never stated that this women, or the women with a child in my daughters school year who also has face tattoos owes me their prettiness. I’ve no idea where you got that impression from? It certainly can’t be from anything that I’ve posted. So why make that incorrect assumption?

Whether you like it or not, we are all judged by what we look like multiple times a day. It doesn’t matter if we are male or female, old or young, black or white, rich or poor. Rightly or wrongly, it’s simply human nature. Always has been, always will be. To state that doing so is ‘patriarchal privilege’ is complete and utter codswollop. Of course sometimes these initial judgments of others can be wrong, sometimes they can be right.

If you are correct in your belief that a man making initial judgements of a lady based upon what she looks like is wrong and ‘patriarchal privilege’, then what is it called when a women does exactly the same thing to a bloke? Is that also wrong? If so, how come you haven’t called that out as well?

This is quite some statement. I mean you can't really complain about the discussion drifting off topic can you? The topic never was one of general aethestics because that's a very short discussion, each to their own, end of discussion.

You should have known this would turn into an argument about mysogyny, you did know that didn't you? You threw down a gauntlet and when people picked it up you decry them for it, that is trolling as per forum rules.

Is it somehow more aethestically acceptable for men to have face tattoos or does that go unnoticed because it doesn't disturb the way you project your desire into the world?

Did you take to social media with overt concern for Mike Tyson when he had his face tat? If so apologies maybe I read the op wrong or maybe if you really don't want to cause argument and bickering you should take more time to explain yourself more clearly.
Good grief.

Let’s clarify a few facts shall we?

I haven’t complained about this thread going off topic.

No, I didn’t know that this thread would turn into a bun fight about misogyny. What I was trying to understand is why an individual, especially an otherwise very attractive one, would do such a thing. This thread was about two particular women in general because in the small town that I live in, I haven’t seen any blokes with face tattoos, and also it’s only women that I find attractive, not men.

IMO, no, it is not more acceptable for men to have face tattoos compared to women. I didn’t start a thread on Mike Tyson because I didn’t find him attractive, he’s got F.U money so hardly has to worry about employment, but mainly because I think Mike Tyson had his face tattoo some time before I frequented PH.

If you or anyone else struggles to understand the extremely simplistic ways in which I post and explain myself, then I can only apologise that I lack the comprehension skills to simplify my points for you any further.

If you, Ben or others are hoping to somehow embarrass me with your intellectual prowess, then you are wasting your time. I know that I’m as dumb as a bag of rocks and I’m comfortable with that.

If you’re hoping that your chivalry to the point of extreme is going to impress the ladies, then then I’ve got some bad news for you. This place is 99% blokes.

Or another possible option might be that by trying so hard to white-night for any female who may be reading this, maybe it’s you who’s the misogynist for believing that women are so feeble that they absolutely need you to protect them?

Given the two sentences above:

1, Why don't you just ask one or both these two women?

2, Why did you think a place that is 99% blokes would have the answer?
In regards to your first question, would you consider it to be good form to go up to a stranger, especially a woman, and ask her why she chose to disfigure her face?
I can’t think of a way suitably diplomatic not to be on the receiving end of a slap.

And your second question, why not?
