Educate me. They were not a thing when I was young.

Now I keep hearing about needing this and that. My daughter is currently with my wife at a 'prom shop'. Apparently, she has just tried a dress on which is stunning. And £600 which is double the ludicrous budget I had assigned.

This is a bunch of 16-year-olds smuggling in the odd bit of alcohol and having a dance surely?

All seems overkill to my pocket. Perhaps I'm just grumpy?

Do any youngsters want to educate me, rather than browbeat me into submission?

She'll need a decent car in which to arrive at the event, too. Possibly with a group of friends, possibly just her and a chauffeur (you'll do as long as you're dressed smartly - but under no circumstances get out of the vehicle).
Yes, I'm afraid of this.

Seems like harmless fun, just because you didn't have one doesn't mean that she shouldn't.

If you don't like it then don't pay for it.
That's where I'm at. Given that I've been hung up on it's not popular. And quite likely I will be overruled as I'm not there to be rude and stop the madness.

We had a "Leavers' do" at the end of sixth form in 1999.

Function room hired at the Earl of Doncaster hotel, the lads all wore suits and the lasses put on nice dresses from high street stores. Not ballgowns, more the sort of thing they'd wear to parties etc.

My school was in a bang average part of town but the sixth form attracted people from all over. I remember one group of lads from a wealthier area hired a limo and dinner suits. We found it ridiculously cringey, laughed at them and said "who the fk do you think you are?!" It appears that the pretentious tts were just ahead of their time.

As an aside: There was a very fit lass in that sixth form who had previously stood me up for a date. On the night of the leavers' do she was all over me but I was having none of it. She asked me to talk to her outside the function room so we sat on the stairs and she told me she may have left me hanging before but she wanted me to take her home that night. And that her knickers were now in her handbag. I said it was too late for that; she'd humiliated me as there were meant to be three couples going out and everyone else turned up so not only had she let me down but she made me look a fool in front of all of them. I still regret that. I should've banged her senseless. What the fk was I playing at?!
Curious, which school? I went to Hall Cross. Daughter at Hayfield.

It's a good thing that kids are interested in cars in some sort of way. Use your own car if you have something fun or take the opportunity to hire something fun.
Tried that. Volvo estate does not cut it apparently.

Brother has an M4, and a classic jag. Might work she says..

McAuley?

Edit, Just seen it's been answered.

Didn't realise there was so many people from Donny who knew how to use the Internet laugh

Ahhh beautiful Doncaster. Are they still wearing that hideous brown uniform at Hayfield? (I'm ex McAuley. Slightly less hideous uniform)
No. It's a bit more tasteful Navy Blue and grey nowadays. The girls have an annoyingly expensive tartan skirt. https://thehayfieldschool.co.uk/wp-content/uploads...

Nobody's mentioned shoes ... what's the budget for shoes ?

I went to Hall Cross when it was Doncaster Grammar School. And the Grand Daughter's going to New College which I think was/is Hayfield ?

Edited by RATATTAK on Tuesday 8th February 23:12
New College is built on land that was part of Hayfields sports ground. Hayfield no longer has a 6th form - although many of its kids go to New College

Shoes have been mentioned as has the ride to college and I have closed my ears!

We are p-2.5 weeks

Emotions are high and tears very frequent.

I’ve got no sense from my daughter for weeks and all sorts of dates, which means that I’m away the night of the prom.

I can’t decide if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. At the moment I’m royally sick of the whole thing which has cost the same as a small holiday.

Drama non stop. Prom is on Wednesday so the only topic of discussion in my house.

Last night I was woken at 1:30 by my daughter in tears. She had been added to a group chat for an after-prom party. This seemed to gee up a remarkable amount of bhyness between the girls. Result is she is now no longer going to the after-prom. Even after she removed herself from the chat, they added her back in just to make sure that she was further destroyed.

Not a happy dad.

To close this one. She went to the prom. She had a good time, and a select few friends came back for an after-drink. The teachers tried to make it a no-alcohol event and completely failed!

She's not split with the boyfriend, so we have a total of 1 photo in exchange for the grand or so the 3 hour event cost.
