This is a first for me in 20 years using the platform ...

I sold an item for £240 in early June and paid extra for it to go Special Delivery 24hrs.

I have messages from the buyer both before and after I sent the item.

He then left me really great feedback saying great communication and I sent it next day etc etc...

I have the tracking from RM that says it was collected from XXXXXXXX DO whatever that means but the signature doesnt mean anything and the signed for name is not the same name as the person who bought the item ?

I assume if it was collected from the post office if thats what DO means whoever collected would have to prove they had the authority to collect ?

This is what the message from eBay says :

Your buyer filed a payment dispute for an order placed on xx Jun, 2022. This means that they disputed a charge directly with their payment institution. They're requesting £240 back, and the reason for this dispute is that the buyer didn't recognise the transaction.

Anyone have any idea how this will pan out ?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yeah I've messaged him I don't really want to call him ....

Yes tracking uploaded ebay say :

Thank you We received your proof of delivery, this will help us better review your case. We'll be sure to notify you with the outcome.

Guess it's just a waiting game now....

I fell foul of this, along with a few other people at the same time

Basically, they bought, waited for it to be delivered and then did a chargeback via their CC company.

I ended up with no item and no money...Police less than interested, despite having an address etc
Ouch that doesn't sound promising then frown

Did you have tracking etc ? How did eBay get out of the seller protection mentioned in above post ?

Not quite sure what more can be done. As you say, wait & see.

Have you checked eBay's T & C to see if the proof of delivery should be sufficient?
No but I suppose it is what it is ... If it's not nothing else I can do apart from drive down and knock on the guys door with some mates biggrin

Does that not mean your money is safe whatever the outcome?
Doesnt look like it ....

A payment dispute is when a buyer initiates a chargeback or other type of dispute with their payment institution (for example, their credit card provider or PayPal). The final decision for refunding the buyer is made by the payment institution.

This is different to the eBay Money Back Guarantee, which is when the buyer works directly with you on eBay to get a refund on a transaction, for example, when the buyer opens a return request or reports that the item wasn't received. In these cases, the final decision for refunding the buyer is made by eBay.

OK apparently all his accounts were hacked... He may have opened the dispute by mistake.

I guess it's not beyond the realms of possibility that it is a genuine mistake.

OMG Rod Serling is at the front door !

I'll keep you posted

Ironically I had the exact same trick pulled on me by a guy called Bagshaw.

He paid a paltry amount for an item by PayPal then initiated a chargeback with the same excuse as you. It was an absolute pain to resolve with PayPal taking the original money and then an extra fee out to deal with it. It took 6 months or so but eventually I got it all back. But I vowed to not use PayPal again and haven't. I also stopped selling on eBay quite a long time ago, there are better alternatives now.
I'm still in comms with this guy but he's not proven yet that Paypal have closed the dispute just loads of waffle. I'll call him later but suspect the number is fake ...

Trouble is eBay now deal with payments so I have no interaction with Paypal. eBay say they send proof of delivery to whoever the buyers payment institution is and whoever that is then decides if you will get your money back !

bks was he. A hacker instituted a chargeback on a random item? Give me strength.

He tried to pull a fast one, hoped you would roll over, then back-pedalled when you didn't.
Maybe hehe Who knows.... I'm just happy it's sorted.... Now back to my cash only eBay rule !

Glad to hear it smile. After googling “eBay chargeback scam” i found a worrying amount of posts on the eBay forums about it and wondered if you were set to be another victim. Thankfully not.
Cheers... Yeah me too !

eBay is pretty much a trust based system. You can do loads like tracked dispatch etc, but it's in the lap of the gods really.

I never sell anything where it's loss would be too much of a problem.
Try FB first and price realistically or cash on collection on eBay on a final value fee weekend deal.

As 2sb says only send on eBay if you can afford to lose… I broke my rule this once and it almost went tits up.

As an alternative I’ve sold electrical things to CEX/Music Magpie in the past with little to no hassle (CEX mostly). You don’t get as much money from them as you would through the other mentioned options, but you aren’t at the mercy of seller fees, Paypal fees and the possible scammers.
Great idea. I sold my Xbox One X to CEX for maybe a tenner less than eBay prices ...
