I have been very lucky.

I bought and renovated two terraced houses in one. They were 60k at an auction.I doubled my money on them and bought a cosy little one bedroom terraced house outright with the profit.

Although I am a Southerner I moved North.Dont kid yourself its not the Powerhouse the Politicians keep dangling under our noses. However the Natives are dead friendly and you are never alone in a pub up North.

These property values are of course unthinkable to the genuine Southerners.I kid myseld that my humble abode would be worth £2 million in Chelsea(thats good enough for me)...and it comes without endless traffic problems (parking, traffic lights,20mph zones, expensive goods).

So without causing a another War what is the attraction of living down South!! And for those of you who are my age...please remember the State Pension payments are the same in Huddersfield as they are in Wimbledon(ahem).

So I ask again ...what does the South East have that Sunderland doesn't??

Surely a lower priced base where you are not financially looking over your shoulder all the time is everyones goal??There are well paid jobs in Sunderland too.

Im not sure if you consider the A20 (Sidcup) area as the South East but there are a number set to lose their income there with a scandal over Speeding Offences.60,000(and counting) Notices of Intended Prosecution delivered in the space of 2 months. One guy has 11.

If my parents died tomorrow, which is possible, (but given how they looked yesterday, they seem intent on going on for a good while), I would have enough money to retire Early.

Would I share it with my kids? Maybe, but I'd have to keep working.

Part of me thinks, "How much did you save, going out to restaurants twice a week ?"
I am a Month off of my State Pension and other Occupational Problems.I still have get up and go.The thought of Double Bubble is deffo winning at the moment !!

Where down south did you move from, and where abouts in Huddersfield are you now? For me it was Canterbury to Holmfirth, and I love it up here. The only move my wife and I would consider now is to move further north still.

The idea of buying cheap houses to renovate sounds great and I would love to be able to do similar, but despite being alright at DIY and being a fairly practical sort, I don't feel like I'd stand a chance if faced with an entire house to fix. When you did this were you already in a trade, or just a keen DIYer who got stuck in?
Hi Huntingdon to Elland...the scenery is magnificent here. But I am also 2 minutes from the M62.Holmfirth is outstanding !!

I grew up in an expensive part of West London, yet bought a three bed detached bungalow in a bloody lovely part of the SE on a single st income (with disabled other half and two toddlers). In 2009...

My little sister is 23, works in the local Asda. Her fiancé is a chippy. They've just bought a new build three bed (where the third room is actually usable).

A 'mate' is still living at home with his mum/stepdad, full of massive vitriol towards anyone who's been able to afford to buy. Completely ignoring the £80k he got in inheritance from when his dad died, the plethora of highly tuned jap cars he's lost tens of thousands on, the decent job he completely disregards as it won't let him buy a 4 bed detached, with triple garage and drive (seriously, and he's been single for as long as I've known him!) which is the minimum he'll look at for his first buy.

We've fallen out after being as thick as thieves in our 20s (when he was being flash lad, and I was working three jobs and scrimping everywhere) - I bumped into his mum over Christmas, and she's absolutely despairing...
Good Post that xx

I don't think it's outrageous to say there's more 100k jobs in London then anywhere else in the UK. Not that 100k is a big salary wink
Yeah but 100k jobs come with huge stress and strain and the fall to 15k for stacking baked beans at TESCOS is immense.

So if you are bluffing about get your skills get out now ....sell your ridiculously priced pad ....and invest up North. The people are friendlier (as they dont have a 100k wage round their neck) and we have The Lakes and The Dales.Once is enough to see Trafalgar Square ...its no big deal without the Pidgeons anyway.Mary Poppins sold up years ago.

Take it from someone who moved years ago and has benefitted.

It's unfortunate really, that we've made house prices the yardstick for how good someone's quality of life is/is likely to be.
Yeah....and how awful that we are so broke (not) we have to live in Calderdale in close viscinity to the Dales and Lake District??

I'll take that anyday ...I was never keen on Congestion Charges.... Traffic Jams.... 20mph Limited areas??

A person from another planet would think its the wrong way round and we should be in the more expensive area ??

Then there is the Lifetime Pension Scenario.

My Mum and Dad were hell bent on leaving my two siblings and I a substantial nest egg when they passed.

They succeded in doing so....God Bless Them.

I'm not sure the current generation and generations that follow them will have the same desire.

If you have taken a life time Pension do you feel any guilt at all....(I'm not expecting many people owning up tbh)

Monthly repayments:

£8,130

ALL TO LIVE ON THE EDGE OF A TRAFFIC JAM.

Why not move to where Happy Valley was filmed (HEBDEN BRIDGE).

You would own a decent property outright in a year with those repayments
