It has come to my notice recently that hardly anyone can pronounce the word "Deteriorate" correctly anymore.

The words seems to come out as "Deteriate". How has this happened?

Standards are deteriating drastically.

Hmmm.
It was a pronunciation query - not a typo query.

I forgive anyone making mistakes (especially me smile), but this pronunciation is not a mistake. It seems to be what a lot of people think is correct. What I wanted to know was, why?

It's in the "draw".

No it's not! It's in the drawer!
Oh please, don't start this one again. 'Drawer' and 'draw' are pronounced in exactly the same way.

A 'drawer' is someone who draws.
Accent sometimes dictates how things sound. "Deteriate" has nothing to do with accent. It's just laziness in not spotting the way the word is constructed and the letters that make it up.

And how do you all pronounce "deteriorate"?

Say it out loud to yourself a couple of times.

Do you make the "OR" sound or do you leave it out?

The latter seems to be fairly common practice these days.

I knew a lady once who flew to Spain on a Vickers VIZcount (it was a long time ago).

My next door neighbour used to talk about the "morbage" her daughter had taken out when she bought her first house.
