Erm. I stood naked in front of a full length mirror (in a hotel room in Berlin) and realised that I was erm flabby.

I wouldn't take any great notice of a couple of pounds or so. A good sized glass of water will put on a few ounces.

What I tend to look at is long term trend. Over a week I can be up and down each day by up to 4 or 5 lb (2 to 3 kg).
a decent pee and a good poo can drop your weight by up to a kilo ...

hence all the stuff with messing about with hydration status just before a weigh-in in sports where weigh-ins are part of the system.
I have decided that I will take my weight at 6 every weekday morning, (except bank holidays), because 8 hours asleep will hopefully help to alter the variation. But clearly weekly trends are more useful, anyway update :
Thursday Morning was 102.2
Friday morning I was 101.8

Problem I see is that I spend 4 nights a week in digs and only weekends with my wife and family, but it turns out she is part of the problem, because whilst she weighs next to nothing she snacks all sorts of crap all weekend, and thinks I should help get it from the snack loaded kitchen.

Yesterday I was even encouraged to make my "speciality" scones and provide them with clotted cream.
Saturday she insisted we go out for a curry, and last night she offered wine, and crisps before the healthy tea I'd cooked.

But anyway, I've managed to avoid most bad things so we will see what Tuesday am brings in my weigh in.

Update:

Weight on Wednesday Morning down to 100.9kg (So managed to lose a tiny amount over the weekend), and this morning down to 100.3Kg which makes me a little under 16 stone)

At work this week I have avoided 24 spoons of sugar, pork pies, bacon and egg snadwiches, at least 8 deep fryed samosas, cake, biscuits and god knows how many sweets. (based on an estimate of my normal greed)

Last night I avoided a pint of bitter, and chips and gravy (I went bowling, and usually I'd have a pint and then supper on the way home)

The only exercise since Tuesday Morning has been 3 games of ten pin, and 4 cycle trips of 2 miles each, on a cycle path in the rain, as fast as I could.

Wife is talking about going out for steak tomorrow.

I've decided I shall NOT mention the irony of her telling me I've GOT to loose weight whilst consuming sugar and fat all weekend, and just hold onto the thought that there is temptation everywhere, and I've got to learn to avoid it. So when we got out I shall have a Diet Coke, or Low Calorie Beer (does such a thing exist?) and pick my food carefully.

If you want to help yourself, don't bother.

Once a week, or better, once every two weeks is better. I'll explain why...

So, as some have mentioned, if you weigh yourself every day, you'll see your weight fluctuate, quite a lot. A pint of water before bed, can see you weighing an extra pound. Simple maths.

However, to see an overall trend (the goal in weight-loss) and not just daily fluctuations, is not only more accurate, but generally better for your mental health. If you are eating healthily, and exercising regularly, you don't need to see an arbitrary number on some un-calibrated bathroom scales to tell weightloss. You'll see it in yourself, and feel it too.

A perfect example would be to go really hard on a running machine wearing plastic bags. You could sweat out a few kilo's pretty easily, and weigh maybe 3 kilo's less than before you started on the treadmill. However, it's dangerous and stupid - it's nearly all sweat, which when you re-hydrate with your water, you'll pit it all back on again.

Good diet, good exercise regime, and a weekly or fortnightly weigh in, just to see the figures are going the right way - remember, the scales aren't going to be accurate, so don't get caught up on the figure. As long as each time you step on the scales, the weight goes down, you're making progress.
I understand that this is the normal practise, but I also know about my own SELF motivation, or lack of, and so for 4 days when I am away from home, I will weigh myself Tuesday to Friday, at the same time, before I shower, and on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, I won't as I don't want to be using 2 different sets of scales.

The Scales I purchased may or may not be accurate, and they are not be calibrated, to some BSi standard but they are repeatable in that if I get on them 6 times in one hour, they give the exact same read out. (Provided I've not pooh'd or eaten obviously).

Friday Morning I had gone up slightly, to 100.6 which I can't easily relate to any particular intake or lack of exercise.

By Today am : Tuesday: down to 99.8 kg
I put this reduction down to : Took the dog for a run on Sunday on the beach, and tried running up the sand dunes.
To be honest I struggled to run more than 20 seconds at a time, so it was more run, walk, walk walk, run, walk etc.
Dog was happy.
Could barely walk on Monday.
I can cycle and swim quite 'vigorously' without getting out of breath, so I assume that using muscles you haven't used in anger is the reason for not being able to do much at a time.

Wednesday am not a gram lost or gained, which I put down to Potatoes for my tea (no really)
Thursday, down to 99Kg which I put down to daily fluctuations.

I went climbing tonight for the first time in about 2 months, which was the 1st time in 2 months, which was the 1st time in 2 months, and every single muscle aches. I think I should take up yoga, and go climbing more often.

Weigh yourself every day and make a simple graph showing your weight loss by the day. Mark your weight on and join up the dots. You will be able to see any sort of trend or plateau. Maybe weekends will show you whack on 4 kg, but by Wednesday it has gone again, which shows something you do over your weekend is ruining your whole plan. Just for example.
Today I was 98.8 Kg which on my graph is between the 2 lines which are 0.6 kg apart, and slope by 0.2 kg per day. The trend is flat at the weekend and 0.3 to 0.4 kg reduction during the week. Early days.

The reason for me starting this thread was to chart the progress, and look for encouragement when it got hard. and this week has been flat. So I was 98.8 Kg last Friday, had one particularly heavy meal time at Lings on Kings (southport) on saturday night, with my family. (Google it - it's a really 'interesting' chineeese with really nice food http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g19...

Did a bit of exercise both Saturday and Sunday (Running with Dog on the Beach), When I weighed in on Tuesday (6am again) I was 98.8 Kg's. Tuesday afternoon I had awful pain in my tummy, which lasted about 3 hours. Yesterday I was 99 kg's and so I felt I had to take action so in the evening so I went on a bike ride for an hour down the side of the river trent. This morning was down to 98.5 kg's but again between 12:30 and 2:30 the pain in my bowels and tummy were excruciating.

Can you have too healthier diet ? I'm had no fat or sugar, since I started, and I'm wondering if my body is complaining.

The symptoms were pretty much what my wife gets with IBS, and that's all stress related. I'd say I'm not stressed but my ezxcema has flared up, which is my usual notice of stress.

Any way, I had a fairly large tea tonight, roast pork and roasted new potatoes and roasted tomatoes, so I expect my weight tomorrow will be higher than today.

Food intake Monday to Friday is typically

a) Large Bowl of Cornflakes and Shreaded wheat, with skimmed milk and black coffee (at 6 am)
b) a banana about 10:30
c) Home made ham salad roll, 2 apples, an orange (at 12 noon)
d) Lots of black coffee (at least 6 cups at work)
e) Chicken Piece with Salad and a brown roll (or fish, salad and pasta, or Scrambled egg on toast, or liver and onions on a bed of rice) about 7:30
f) More Fruit whilst watching telly.

Do you know what ? I never drink any water. Doh.

Exercise is Typically

a) Tuesday to Thursday Rain or Shine Cycle the 2 miles each way from my digs to place of work.
a2) If I feel good I'll go for a bike ride for an hour or ride home the long way around.
a) Saturday and Sunday take dog on beach or in woods (Bought a pair of trainers and have started to run in the woods - although I soon have to stop.
c) Trying to get the energy to go climbing once a week (I came home and spelt from 5:30 til 6:45 today so didn't feel up to it)
d) Used to go swimming every wednesday, and there's no excuse not to.

When I look at the amount of food I've cut out - eg Monday morning after driving 110 miles I'd stop at McD's for a pancake breakfast wuth syrup and have 4 sugars in each of my 2 coffees.

Friday afternoon, I'd forgo lunch and stop at a truckers catering caravan on the way home for a "allonbreakfast"

Anyhow from what you've posted it looks like you're already 3-4 pounds down in under a month, which is pretty good going.
I think we are looking at twice that, but it's like digging a hole in the garden of a new build. Easy to get through the top soil, but then you reach the rubble.

Okay so Friday I was down to 98.5 which is 10 Lbs lost in not quite 4 weeks, and so far I have been very careful not to count calories, and just put foods into 3 groups - Bad, Good, and needed but only in smaller quantities.

I have however started to look on the packets, at the Calorie count, but have yet to add any particular meal up, although I've made buying decisions based on the "lowest".

Funny though, the other day I bought some 'Ansley Harriet' Cous Cous, and the Packet was 100g, and the listing on the back of Calories per portion was for 130g, so you are not getting a full portion in one packet.

Have to say that despite my misgivings about my wife, she went out of her way to ensure that I had tasty but healthy food all weekend, and me having lost 10 Lbs (I have to convert it into old money for her) she was much more amorous than previously. If this is the carrot, then hell the next 18 kg's will not need much motivation.

Good man, I'm glad you're moving in the right direction and your wife is being supportive.

People underestimate how much women like a good body. I consider myself pretty average but compared to most I'm like something out of 300.

I can't tell you how much attention it can draw and my current girlfriend fancied me before we actually spoke to each other and its a very powerful thing to your wife/girlfriend to know that others desire you.

I am genuinely a believer that when in relationships we have to constantly make an effort for each other, after all sex is really primarily something that is based on attraction and its important you can remain attractive in that way to your partner. This isn't shallow (like all fat people say) its reality.

Although my motivation for training is very different from the above even if I recognise the power of it. I personally sit behind a desk all day and just love to go and do something physical once a day and push myself.
Never really thought about it.

I was very fit when we met, and she was a size 8.

Started the week at 97.5 on Monday (I was 97.5 10 days before that too)
96.6 Tuesday,
96.2 Wednesday following 18 miles of cycling on tuesday evening.
and 96.1 kg this morning

But This is a solid 15lbs reduction since start of May.

I may have to put a third new hole in my best belt.

Today 95.8 kg's

This is almost what I got down to in spring 2010, and then spent 2 years putting it all back on.

According to my calculations it has taken 50 days to loose 1/3 of my target weight loss.
