Know this has been done before, but how long should antibiotics take to kick in? I'm currently 48hrs in, and they don't seem to be making a difference, so struggling a bit as a consequence.

Saw an emergency dentist over the weekend, and they said treatment wouldn't be possible until the infection was under control. Currently on Amoxicillin and still waiting for pain to subside, though Neurofen is just about keeping things under control (combined with vodka!).

Teeth are a marvel, their ability to generate a level of pain that is so massively disproportionate to their size is amazing!! Wars would be won with this level of pain!!

Amoxicillin should have started to work by now, that's a common drug for tooth issues, but codeine is the only over the counter drug that will get anywhere near helping with the pain, get some asap

Try to see your dentist this week and explain that you are in great pain, only they understand how much teeth can hurt

Take care
Still waiting for antibiotics to kick in, but will be making as many calls as needed tomorrow to get this sorted! Severe pain is a pretty strong motivator to resolve things.

Now that looks like so far the wrong side of agony, I'd not want to contemplate how grim that would have been to resolve!! Though respect your resolve in trying to guide your son in not needing up in the same situation.

It seems like teeth are a bizarre medium, where seemingly intelligent and professional people don't do the right thing, ignore what needs to be done - and end up with having to endure high pain and stress levels to get things back on track. Why are we so stupid in this regard?? Fear, avoidance??

First treatment for an abscess is drilling a hole in the tooth to allow infection to drain out. This can relieve the pain almost immediately.
Antibiotics should only be prescribed if access to do the above treatment is limited by swelling, preventing you opening your mouth.

Was an xray taken?
Rollin

No X-ray was taken, out of hours dentist agreed with my 'internet diagnosis' that this was a dental abscess and offer of drilling tooth in question wasn't given. Was prescribed Amoxicillin to get infection under control, and once this was done was left to me to find dentist to try and resolve. Swelling has increased slightly, and opening of jaw has become more painful as a result.

Was initially happy with the service I received from out of hours dentist, but based on your comments, am forced to question this.
