I'm going to get a set of dumbbells for my gym, was thinking 2.5kg-30Kg.

It looks like the best is either metal "prostyle" or polyurethane. A set as above of either looks to be about £1k plus a few hundred for a rack.

Any tips for one over the other and best place to purchase?

Been looking at Sport-tiedje and Fitness Superstore/Powerhouse.

Thanks for the info Belle427.

I know these are very popular but from what I know of adjustable weights they have certain disadvantages and I'm lucky enough to not need their space saving advantage.

hehe

I'm a hard gainer which is annoying sometimes but on the upside I can eat as much cake as I like and not get fat.

Decided on a set of Jordan fitness urethane dumbbells, 2.5-25Kg with a three tier rack. They seem very good quality and apparently are absolutely odourless.

They do two shapes, Classic:

and "Ignite" anti-roll:

The Ignite ones are slightly more expensive and aside from looking more cool IMO, I'm not sure how useful the antiroll shape is.

I did wonder if the more angled part of the heads of these might dig in to the legs/hips when lugging the heavier ones up for bench press etc.

Any thoughts from those with experience of this sort of thing?

That does look good. If you have the space then you may as well use it.
Biggest problem I find with a home gym is explaining to visitors why I'm still fat.
Indeed, a room full of exercise gear does set certain expectations biggrin
Depends if you have an over inflated ego or not wink

Most people buy exercise equipment with good intentions... are deluded, undisciplined, lazy numpties who see a great body in a cheap TV ad and are stupid enough to think that the rubbish gadget they buy will somehow give them this body in one week by them just looking at it.

BTW Hoofy any thoughts on those antiroll jobbies, do you reckon they might dig in and are just for show or do you think they're useful compared to the round ones?

I've not had any problems with round ones. If they are cut off on top and underneath, then they will be bigger elsewhere compared to the same weight of round one which may be an issue.
Yeah I dunno if they're wider or thicker or what to compensate having never seen them in the polyurethane. I personally don't have a problem with the round ones rolling around either.

Those 'ignite' anti roll dumbbells look very annoying to use! Metal dumbbells are also annoying as they make noise/clang and can feel a bit too solid (more vibrations, less give).

Definitely go for the standard polyurethane!
Sorry just saw your post CWAH, thanks for your input!

I agree with the metal clanking problem, when you talk about the Ignites being annoying do you mean the fact that they are not smooth/have angular/pointy bits?

I think that sounds like sound advice and that's 2 for the round ones now.

An update: I got some round urethane dumbbells from Jordan Fitness in the end. Very nice people to deal with and very good quality products. The packaging it all came in was in itself very impressive!

Thanks very much indeed to everyone who added their pearl of wisdom to choose these, they are just perfect. The round shape really was the one to go for, making them mangeable and comfortable. They don't clank together or rattle like metal ones could have done and the urethane has absolutely no smell whatsoever. As you can see in the photo the weight is very clearly marked on the ends making choosing and racking in the correct order very easy.

The only thing now is that my OCD means they'll all have to be arranged with the lettering horizontal to be able to sleep at night. (they don't look half as straight in the photo in fact, will have to do better laugh)

Ok fk, you're right! yikes

The truth is, I finished putting it together last night at midnight and then realised the top shelf for the 4 pairs of smallest dumbbells was in the middle. So at 00.30 I took it to pieces and changed it around so that's probably why the order was missed.

Fear not, it shall be sorted!

Actually there is a concept known as "balancing extractions" so you're closer to the truth than you think!

ETA BTW I just opened the Flickr account as Photobucket is rubbish now and luckily I didn't fill in my real name wink

Alright, I admit it, I don't have OCD at all. It was all an elaborate ruse to draw attention to myself in order to satisfy my narcissistic tendencies.

I have a Facebook page too. Look under Geoff Davies.
