My big toe has gone numb ( over time ), and now it hurts constantly, imagine being stung by a stingy nettle then after the initial pain goes there's that tingling kind of pain/burn, it's exactly that. Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?

Gout?
Ah, hadn't thought it could be that. I've just had a quick look, basically everything I like to injest is on the "can give you gout" list frown

Diabetes?

Does it happen after eating confectionary or cake/dessert?

They'll only chop the one leg off. Probably.
I don't eat cake/sugery stuff, I love cheese, and beer, and meat. Preferably all in the same meal.

I would suggest going to the Doctor ...

Do you have any calcification around the joint of the toe? Could be gout or arthritis. Diabetes can come along with gout so the doctor should give you a blood test for that as well.
I suppose I'd best. My knees are buggered, goes with the territory, but I've not had them diagnosed. Didn't know you could get arthritis in your toe?!I have the general impression that my chassis has got to the 200,000 mile mark ( if I were a car ) and things are starting to break/wear out.......

If it's gout, you'll ****ing know its gout. evil

Try placing a bedsheet over the toe. If the pain is excrutiating, its probably gout.

If you can walk with it, its probably not.

IMO either your pain threshold is high and you don't make a fuss over things, or it's something else. Gout is probably the single worst pain i've ever felt and that includes broken bones.
Well yeah, I take after my father, I'm not sure whether it's a high pain threshold or idiocy. One of his mates mangled his finger by accident, I took him to hospital and he was asking if the Dr could quickly cut it off and sow it up so he could get back in time to feed the sheep. Mind you he is 92. hehe

Does sound like a peripheral neuropathy of which there are many causes.
Doesn't seem right does it. I've seriously just considered chopping it off. it's just a nuisance.

I think its my back, weirdly. Its noticable that the burning sensation always happens when I'm sitting in the car/tractor. I wonder if that's what is making my knees hurt too?
