I've had really really horrendous toothache for a few days now, slowly building up from a full ache to what I can now only describe as someone using a pneumatic drill directly in my mouth. I know the cause, which is an impacted wisdom tooth (fk all wise about these bd teeth) growing sideways along my gum into the back of the molar. 2 30mg codeine, 2 paracetamol and 3 ibuprofen don't even take the edge off it. I cannot get an appointment with my dentist until Tuesday at 9am, which won't do anything as this is a hospital job like my last one and NHS 111 don't want to know. I have been in pain before but this is something else. It's referring pain to my ear, head, a tooth in my upper jaw and the gum near the front of my mouth. I can barely function. I am sat on my bed just shouting in agony.

Not after any advice, I just need to whinge as this is defcon 1 on the pain scale. It's even trolling me. Every time I think it might be settling down it then springs back into action with a big fk you and comes back even more painful than before.

Anyone else currently suffering?

Sounds awful. You did really well to log onto to PH and post a long, well constructed thread about it in between the shouting however. Maybe the codiene has worked slightly better than you give credit for?
It took me a while to write it, but it also gave me something to concentrate on other than the pain. I also hate not formatting my posts properly, so I always try and post proper sentences etc.

We have an emergency dentist on call and if the pain was that bad I would not have to wait until Tuesday to see them. The worst would be they would see me asap on Monday morning.

You need to maybe change your dentist.
It is definitely something to consider, but all they would do is give me pain killers if anything as this is a hospital job. I had the same 6 years ago with the wisdom tooth in my left lower jaw, it had to be taken out at the hospital under a general anaesthetic. I was told this will be the same.

The pain has subsided for now, but I have been told by NHS 111 not to take any pain killers for a bit as I have over dosed.....

The pain has now gotten so bad that my right temple and most of the right side of my face is in absolute agony. I cannot cope with the pain. The only way to stop it for a minute is to drink something and keep the fluid on the right side of my mouth. Once I swallow it the pain comes back.

The NHS still do not want to know. I have never before felt a pain like this, it's the worst physical pain that I have ever experienced. I am typing this while having fluid in my mouth, as when the pain comes it leaves me a complete and total wreck.

I think a trip to a & e is in order, I need something to take away the pain.

Shame your several hundred miles away as I have a stash of codine here left over from a broken rib.
Thanks for the thought. I have a box of codeine already but they don't even touch the pain.

I had a similar thing a few years back, local quack scripted me DF118's...now they ARE some good drugs.....

Had the bad boy taken out less than 24 hours later
They're a stronger form of codeine aren't they? Not sure if that would work? NHS 111 seem to think that nothing other than removing the tooth will stop the pain.

clove oil may take the edge off it, I used it for two weeks when needing a root canal but in wrong country.
I've been told not to put anything on the area that is causing me the pain.

I find solpadene max helps to take the edge off. I have suffered from a few really bad toothaches, 1 ended in a&e when my face swelled up like a balloon.
Ive got one brewing, failed root canal which needs taking out or re rooting. Have flared up a couple of times but have managed to get antibiotics before it really started to hurt.
I don't have an infection so not sure if that would work when nothing else has touched it. When the pain hits I cannot move, I just go to the fetal position and just shout. I thought the pain was bad earlier but I managed to ride that out and it subsided, this is a complete new level of pain though.

I'll be on the phone to the dentist first thing. My tooth is under the gum so it makes it that much harder to remove. I have to have it done at the hospital as I need to be put under. Still waiting to be triaged, but the pain is getting worse and harder to control.

I'm being given a tramadol to try and help me sleep. Going to be at my dentist first thing in the morning.

Tramadol made zero difference. Can't sleep, too much pain. Calling a Bupa dentist in the morning as they open earlier. Happy to pay private if it gets me sorted quicker.

Oddly, the pain seems to be a bit more focused on a tooth that I had filled in September. I'm hoping that I may just need a root canal, but I guess I'll know more after an x-ray. I will need to go to John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford for the wisdom tooth out which I do not fancy one bit.

NHS wouldn't give me morphine last night, they say they aren't allowed to send someone home after taking it.

My tooth in my upper jaw is painful today. I reckon it's either an abscess or I need a root canal. Booked in to dentist at 1:15pm, so going to attempt some sleep considering I got no sleep at all last night.

Just got back from the dentist, managed to get an earlier appointment.

I'm on antibiotics as there is some infection and I will need a root canal / tooth removal.

Also picked up some clove oil. Doesn't seem to have made a massive difference tbh.

I didn't think it was possible but the pain has gotten worse since going to the dentist. I guess that is because he had to tap my tooth / I had to have an x-ray and the plastic bit was where my tooth is. I officially cannot cope.

Cheers! I think the ABs are kicking in as I am definitely in less pain. I was feeling very nauseous earlier as well and I was convinced that I was going to be sick. Managed to have a nap after letting the pain hit me and then letting it subside. Not sure how it will be tonight / over night, but right now I am taking the improvement.

Try to sleep sitting up. Reduces the local blood pressure and your pain is caused by pressure from the infection.
That is what I tried last night which did not work. I was just in constant pain. Pain is kicking in again now that I have gone to bed. Might be another night on the sofa for me.

I was swilling and keeping cold water in my mouth over night, it was the only thing that got me through. Earlier today was bad but since mid afternoon it has been bearable. I've even managed to eat something.

if the ABs are cillin based, then the nauseous could mean you are sensitive to them.

I have been on Clarithromycin for a week due to infected shoulder and it didnt touch it, been on Flucloxacillin for a week and its clearing up but by hell does it make me feel ill.
I was nauseous before taking them. I've never had an issue taking ABs before

The pain is considerably less, thanks for asking. I still have some, but I think I am on the mend. Next step will be root canal next week.

I was told to avoid gels so I didn't consider them. Definitely feeling on the up now though.

The pain has come back today. Not as bad, but definitely worse than yesterday. Maybe the infection is fighting back.

The pain has almost gone now. Another course of antibiotics to finish off and then can get booked in for a root canal.
