I'd imagine Pistonheads has a large contingent of middle aged men, many of whom may have or have had an enlarged prostate.
There are are many surgical fixes for the condition and new ones coming on stream......if you'll excuse the pun.....all the time.
As someone who is looking for a more permanent solution than daily tamsulosin tablets I'd like to hear from fellow sufferers who have been down the surgical route.
Was it entirely successful,if not what side effects have you had,in hindsight would you have the op again etc etc.
There was a chap who started a thread towards the end of last year while having surgery, laser if I recall, but he didn't come back with an update.
There's a new procedure now where they hold the prostate out of the way,a lot less invasive than previous methods but you have to wonder about the long term success.

Not at all.Enlarged prostate has little to do with prostate cancer

I bow to your superior knowledge, it's just that when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer the first test was on my prostate to see if it was enlarged. smile
I don't have cancer, it's a completely different scenario with different treatment

Thanks for that Twig.
That's one of the older procedures isn't it ? More invasive than more recent techniques like using steam and such like and from what I've read more likelihood of side effects like incontinence and erectile disfunction, any chance of either and I'd stick with medication

Interesting thread (if that's the correct term). I'm 60, and don't have any really significant issues, but I do notice that first thing in the morning, the stream is slow to start (and that's without getting up at all in the night, I hardly ever do) and weak. After that, the rest of the day is fairly normal, I don't go more than 3 or 4 times all day until bedtime, and although the stream isn't a jet, as such, it's not so weak that I have to push (well not after the first one of the day, as above).

Had a PSA test a couple of years ago and that was all normal.

Seems to be a little worse at times but then calms down again. BPH was mentioned previously when I spoke to the GP. I'm not particularly concerned at present; should I be?
The way I understand it is if you have to go constantly, especially in the night, and you have no problems peeing but you don't empty your bladder each time it's probably an enlarged prostate.
If you're having difficulty starting the stream you should be checked for prostate cancer.
That's what I was told.
Anecdotally but I knew a guy who suffered from being unable to pee,he suffered for quite a while before going to the Doctor's.He died of prostate cancer a couple of years later.
Get checked as soon as you notice any change is my advice.I put up with going the loo 3 or 4 times a night for at least a year before I went to the GP.My condition isn't particularly bad, it's the sudden urge to pee that's the most inconvenient

Those who've had treatment on the NHS ,were you given a choice of the different procedures or were you just told what you were having ?

I was on Tamsulosin for years, (stopped after the Rezum Op’) it affects your sex drive, causes abnormal ejeculation, ( you will fire blanks )
Doesn't affect my sex drive and the dry ejaculation isn't permanent, not for me anyway, I'm back to normalish

I don't know whether I mentioned this before but there's a connection between enlarged prostate and low vitamin D.
There was some research done in China I think it was.
From my own experience,in the summer when I'm getting plenty of sunshine and therefore vitamin D I can cut back on my medication and my toilet visit frequency doesn't increase.
Instead of a daily tamsulosin I can go to every other day,in fact I haven't taken 1 since Friday morning.

You also perspire more which reduces your urine output. Excessive vitamin D can cause calcium build-up (hypercalcaemia) which has implications for the kidneys.
You're unlikely to have excessive vitamin D unless you're taking supplements, your body regulates it from food and the sun,not so much in supplement form.
Low vitamin D can cause many issues, some quite serious, I know that from personal experience.

Quite so, but lots of blokes do take supplements and there's definitely a top limit of how much you should take. It's a balance but with quite a wide plateau of safety.
I'm just pointing out a not very well known relationship between vit D and enlarged prostate that might help some sufferers.....and anyway most blokes in the northen hemisphere would benefit from taking a D supplement in the darker months

I haven't seen this treatment before,an implant that is removed after 5 days
Spider-shaped device could help millions of men cut night trips to loo https://mol.im/a/9661745 via http://dailym.ai/android

I had a follow-up last week. PSA is much lower (1 compared to 4 something a year ago). Flow test all good, and bladder empties properly.

The urologist did say that she wants me to stay on the Tamsulosin, and credits that with fewer night-time loo visits. There has certainly been an improvement in that area. She says there is no long term risk from staying on them, so I'll stick with them for the next 6 months. No other side effects and all is good. Follow-up appointment in a year.
I've been on tamsulosin for 4 years

Been doing some reading and there's some evidence that taking a zinc picolinate ( not citrate or gluconate ) supplement can shrink the prostate.
