The 2023 weight loss thread - all welcome
Discussion
Following the success of this in 2022 I think it's about high time we got a bunch of new recruits for 2023.
I only joined the 2022 thread in July after I buggered my knee up and decided to lose some weight. There were a few notable contributors in the 2022 thread that really spurred me on so I'm hoping a collective effort in 2023 can help a few others out too. I feel a lot better and fitter!
Just pre Christmas I was -22kgs from my June start. If I can do it, anyone can do it!
Wether you've had a great 2022 and your goal is to maintain weight, increase muscle and reduce fat, you've had a particularly gluttonous Christmas, or whether you've got a chunk to lose, there's room in the thread for you!
Last year's format worked well so I'll largely replicate that for the 2023 thread.
If you want to get fitter or lose a few pounds sign up on the Wiki and add your contributions here! I'll do my best to check in weekly.
So... Who's in for the ride?
Wiki can be found here:
https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
I'd encourage all users to update the table every one or two weeks. Set a reminder on your phone. The less drop outs the better, even if you're temporarily heading in the wrong direction. The group can rally round and help everyone along, don't be afraid to say you're struggling (illness, feeling down, mental health, lost mojo, injury).

First step is no booze for January everything else should just fall into place from there.
Can someone add me to the wiki page please as I know I'll cock it up, I'll then fill it in?
Done. Can someone add me to the wiki page please as I know I'll cock it up, I'll then fill it in?
I'm going to give Dry January a go too, if I can do the month I might just roll with it and see how long I can go.

My weakness is food, I've given up drinking pretty much, just can't control eating.
When I started I thought "there's no way I'll be able to lose much weight as I'm just too lazy - I don't want to flog myself in the gym for 10hrs+ a week"The 2022 thread (particularly r3g and Gangzoom) taught me that no matter what you do. You can't out run a bad diet.
I started calorie counting everything that was going in and limiting myself to ~1600cals daily (average). It's pretty alarming how much calories can be consumed nonchalantly. It's all about averages though. If you've had a heavy day, offset it with a few lighter days.
I upped my excersise a bit, but not that much tbh. The weight has dropped off so far, it's all about being in a calorie deficit. The first 8 weeks were hard as I got into the rythm. Found filling foods and trained myself to eat accordingly and not take anything for granted. I was in a constant state of "a bit hungry" but the results on the scales make it all worth it.
I indulged over Christmas (of course) and I honestly felt so uncomfortably full for a while week. Your stomach does shrink and stretch in response to how much food your shovelling in. The reality of it is that most people (in the UK) are overweight and it's a real problem.
Have you used a turbo trainer or excersise bike before?
Ive always done a bit of cycling and enjoy it. I bought a turbo trainer a few years back for over winter and used it twice. The experience was very poor. (I appreciate this isn't a peleton, but bare with me)
The thing that attracts me to cycling (and why I enjoy it) isn't for the fitness aspect (that's an added benefit). It's the sounds of the birds and trees in the woods. It's the freshness of the morning dew on the leaves and the trickle of the stream. It's the snapping and crinkle of leaves and twigs beneath the wheels, the views and freshness of a coastal road in Devon and the rolling hills, fields and spring lambs bounding around.
On the turbo trainer I was in a grey, damp, concrete block garage with music going. There's no wind/breeze to keep you cool (a fan would resolve this), but the whole experience was very lacking of anything really. Suppose it might be better if you're competing against other people and you have a trainer shouting at you.

Currently over 123kg and have a family history of diabetes and strokes.
I need to sort myself out. This is ridiculous.
I've added you to the wiki. Please put in your target and comments.Currently over 123kg and have a family history of diabetes and strokes.

Don't forget to check back in on the wiki everyone. Try to do it weekly or fortnightly. Plus put in here how you're finding it, hints, tips and struggles and what you're doing to better yourself.

One thing I did (think it was r3g who told me to do it), was when you've lost some weight, visualise it.
Fill up lemonade or milk bottles with water. A big lemonade bottle is 2kg. Doesn't take long (if you're determined) for them to pile up!
Since I started I've lost an everage weight of a 6yr old child

What’s everyone doing with the remnants of Christmas goodies? bingeing it all, ignoring it or trying to give it away?! I would hate to bin(ge) it all but struggle with the temptation of it all sitting there! I think I will take as much of it into the office as possible next time I am in and try and pass it on to people with even less willpower than me! Stopping booze I find no problem it’s the chocolate etc sitting there tempting me I find harder…
Local food bank or homeless shelter? You don't need/want it. Somebody out there desperately does.Don't forget folks, you get thin in the kitchen!
You get fit in the gym!
There's no point going the gym every day if you're shovelling in 4k calories to go with it.
Think of it this way:
A 30min 5k run burns around 500cals
It's easier cutting 500cals out of your daily intake.
(It's not quite that simple because if you're running you also get fitter and reducing visceral fat)

This is my issue...I'm fairly sure I have an eating disorder (binge eating). When I'm happy I eat, when I'm sad I eat. Stressful day at work? Be rude not to have a bar of chocolate (not a small 45g bar either...). Good day at work? Oh its a treat go on then.
On a bad day I can eat 5,000 calories and not feel full.
Actually you know what...I'm going to speak to someone about it. I've been thinking about it for a while and keep putting it off.
I used to be like that, it's why I was a fatty in the first place. I'm not pretending it wasn't hard, it was, but having a hard limit and religiously sticking to it every day worked for me. You just get used to eating less. On a bad day I can eat 5,000 calories and not feel full.

At the time of life where its getting harder to keep off the excess pounds and really easy to put back on.
Last year got myself down to 79kgs, but end of year and Xmas seen it creep back up to 86kgs.
I normally do a lot of mountain biking and occasional tennis, but i tore a calf muscle in December, so spent a couple of weeks dormant, with walks starting last week, getting longer the last 5 days, going to continue with that but increasing the speed and hopefully back on the bike in a week or so.
Can I be added to the table please

Current weight 86kg, target weight 79kg, reduce alcohol and evening peanuts sessions, low carb and intermittentant fasting, usually no breakfast
42 people and counting!!
If everyone on the list loses 5kgs that's equivalent of a Yamaha R1 (wet with full tank), 105 bottles of lemonade or 7000 packets of crisps!
I'll be in for the long haul, according to my plan, probably 4months or more but I'll need to keep tracking my weight/fitness going towards. When you don't track it, it creeps (or rockets) up!
My fitness Pal is a good app. Personally I use Nutracheck as I like it's interface and find it easy to use, or you could use a spreadsheet and do it all manually but that's a bit more involved.
