If you divide a kilometre distance by 8 and multiply by 5 to get miles, then get confused and divide the miles figure by 8 and multiply by 5 again. The two miles figures add up to roughly the original KM figure, at least to within speedo error.

Is there any practical application for this?

Isn't this just simple maths?

5/8 is the approximate ration between the equivalent km & miles.

It's like saying it is a strange coincidence that 5/8 = 10/16 = 1/1.6 = ad infinitum.
The coincidence is that it applies to KM to mile conversions, which made me wonder if there might be some practical application in calculations.
