Spare a thought today for Giordano Bruno, burned at the stake on this day in 1600 for such crazy heretical views as "the Sun is a star" and "other stars may have planetary systems, and potentially life on those planets". Many revere him as a martyr for science; yes he was a theist and held on to that belief until his unjust demise, but as a scientist he was able to challenge the fundamentals of the currently held view of the universe (i.e. Genesis) through the presentation of observations and logic.

So, he was a man who was so keen on the pursuit of knowledge over the reinforcement of dogma that he maintained this pursuit knowing it would cost him his life in a very unpleasant manner. Without he and those who followed, where would we be today?

There is a live webcam of the Campo de Fiori, with the statue commemorating him and his life at the location he was burned.
