First up, yes eBay has lots of options but that's the issue...!

Just bought a Halford pro roller cabinet and it came with drawer liners however said liners are sort of 3mm think fairly dense foam which are quite smooth... sort of a sheen finish if you like and whilst they do the job, when you open or close the drawers the tools all slide around and that's no use... bit like those Rolson interlocking squares you get for the floor, not very "sticky"

In my old roll cab, I had that really cheap, thin, nasty sort of rubber matting that you can use to put under rugs and stuff and whilst quicky 'tacky' it was too thin and all scrunched up in the drawers. You could buy rolls of it in the pound shop, sort of chess board weave.

So basically, trying to source a roll of something that combines both... basically the same idea as the drawer liners that Halfords supplied, semi-rigid but fairly soft to the touch and about 3mm thick but more of a rubberised construction thus non-slip and may stop my tools all sliding around.

Any recommendations... as said, lots of options on eBay but very hard to gauge without seeing the stuff!

Ikea sell some nice feeling draw liners, slightly tacky so stuff does not slide around, soft enough to absorb a battering.

That's a good shout but my OCD wouldn't cope with it being white and thus grubby very quickly... I know, I know... but still...

If you plan to organise the tools in each tray you might want to try using layered foam, sometimes called tool foam or 'cut and peel'. The idea is that you cut the tool outline into the upper layers and peel them off the lower layers to leave a pocket that the tool sits in.
I did consider that but I think I'd prefer the flexibility to move tools around / add more etc and so that coudl be a bit of a ballache.

That's looking like a candidate, similar to what I had but looks much thicker / heavier duty but if it almost sticks the tools down, that's probably a shout

Thanks gents

i have bought some cheap interlocking foam floor tiles. i will be lining my toolboxes with them. have a look on youtube. but before i do that i need to organise my collection of odd , broken and mislad tools.
watch this space smile
I have those tiles on the floor, sort of 10mm thick interlocking but like the drawer liners supplied with the roller cabinet, they're not rubber and thus don't offer much in the way of adhesion... hence, my current drawer liners don't stop my spanners etc sliding around when the drawers are opened or it's dragged across the garage. The roll of rubber matting the chap posted earlier look like it could do the trick, I believe it has a slight tackiness to it and thus will hopefully grip the tools a bit better. Had similar before but it was a very light version, a heavy duty type should be ideal... perhaps!

That said and done, the spanners were the worst for traveling but I discovered the plastic tray they came in (which won't fit in the top drawers) can be pulled part easily and thus just leaves the sort of racking the spanners were clipped in to... and so that's appeased my OCD temporarily!

Ie the 'racking' bit that the spanners clip in to, hidden under the card / packing on this image can be pulled off the outer tray if you like... handy!

Cheers

Just found this via B&Q but issue is, hard to tell which are the right cheap, lightweight versions and which are quite a heavy duty version!

Trying to avoid venturing anywhere near a shop for the next two weeks too!

I feel a "show us your tool box" thread coming up... though being Pistonheads, that could veer off track within a few posts!

Still not resolved this yet but did remove the massive Halfords sticker (heat gun and no prints left on my thumbs) and replaced it with a silhouette images of the car, front on... I think this is great... the missus has since given up all hope.

Priorities...

i am sure there will be somebody with six figures smile worth of snap on along shortly smile my toolboxes were cheap and as much as it pains me to admit it , most of my stuff is cheap and a lot of it broken.
i did have a look on ebay for some slap on badges for the toolboxes but could only find strap on ones. i was thinking i could cut them down or find somebody with a 3d printer to make me some. as it is i need to finish bodging up the house smile
Well I'm with you there... most of my stuff has been collected over the years and added to bit by bit as and when the job dictated plus Aldi have supplied several electrical tools such as the grinder, the reciprocating saw and the battery drill and to be fair, they're great for what I need. The roller box itself has been the dearest purchase thus far, but was more of a necessity as I had stuff everywhere.

It's much like the stuff in the "Show us your garage" thread that was running, as lovely as the huge budget, pristine efforts are they just don't appeal... the eclectic mix of random stuff in a slightly used and abused garage is far more appealing.

Function over form!

I buckled, the magpie syndrome kicked in and I've spent more than she'd be happy with on their modular tool sets...

Bought a 1/4" set, 3/8th set and the spline / torx bits set... all three fit in one drawer of the lower roll cab.

I have a further four drawers to fill.

This could get expensive!

very envious smile i did look at those but i could not justify it. for the same reason , i will not go into lidl or aldi , as they always have something or other that might be a good buy.
i need a bench vice and a bench grinder. trouble is i do not have a bench smile
i had to buy a replacement sds as my last one went up in smoke, so my tool fund is a little depleted.
more pictures of your tool set ups please, sorry i do not get out much smile
To honest, it was a bit of a unnecessary purchase but I was given some vouchers via work and had a couple of gift cards from Christmas to cash to use plus they had the three for two deal on so it sort of made sense plus whilst I have assorted sockets sets / tools etc, they were spread between an old cheap roller cabinet and my faithful Stanley tool box. I forever found myself raking around for the right tool in the garage and given the vast majority of car based jobs can be done with the 1/4, 3/8 and assorted spline / Torx bits... this sort of made sense.

My issue is, I was forever moving tools from the roller cabinet to the toolbox and back again as the situation dictated and thus stuff got lost or I'd get somewhere and realise I didn't have X, Y or Z tool so whilst I've now sort of doubled up on the 1/4 and 3/8 sets, hopefully it'll make life a bit easier and given time is precious these days, hopefully being a bit better organised will pay off!

Currently just rearranging the entire garage, again fed up of being hampered by piss poor organisation and clutter!

It can't end well!

i really am not capable of organising anything, that is how i am wired. recently had a plumbing emergency. it was like a dream , i was able to locate the correct tools and fittings because this was the first lot of tools that i had sorted out .it is a slow process to organise everything but definately worth it.
i might be able to pick up some (free) old kitchen cabinets. anybody use these for tool stoarage?
i also have my eye on an old wardrobe that my dad does not use, much smile
I've slowly managed to sort my storage, took ages but it was all free... managed to source an old, 6ft tall, twin door cupboard that looks like it used to live in a school or something and then also sourced two, 4ft wide grey steel units with solid wood work tops - one has twin doors and shelves, the other three very big drawers so when side by side, make for a superb bench / storage units. I also got those lightweight alloy shelves from Ikea, two sets for under a tenner and they're great too... but I digress and have started a new thread up for the sharing of such ideas.

And yes, kitchen units do work well... just get them securely bolted down and thus good storage solution plus they'll have a rather heavy worktop which is good for mounting the vice on and such like. Very cheap / usually free too as people (aka, the other halves) are forever upgrading kitchens and such like. Would be lovely to have a couple of grands worth of bespoke bench and tool storage but this is the real world!
