If it ain't broke, change it anyway. Seems to have been the F1 motto since day one smile

Do we like this? The social media reaction seems hugely negative, although in fairness it was the same reaction to 'point for fastest lap', which actually turned out ok-ish.

Personally I think those viewers that will understand the graphics relevance probably don't need them, and for those that don't, they'll just be in the way.

Even if it was accurate... Why take away the thrill of watching live and NOT knowing what will happen next? And it's not accurate in any case so that for me puts in firmly in 'distraction' territory.

I guess the theory is that this in some way makes the sport easier to understand. But I reckon if any of my none F1 friends watched a race with these graphics, I'd have to spend the first hour trying to explain how they get the data and why certain performance attributes matter during a race/season.

This. In a nutshell.

The question is what are they trying to divert attention from........?
A bit like watching an action movie, but the picture is overlaid with members of the crew explaining how they made each part. Adds another dimension for sure... Also totally ruins the movie!

Hopefully it won't be like that.. Fingers crossed it's not as disruptive as it sounds. Although in the AWS video it looked pretty distracting to me, if that is indeed how it will be implemented live.

I suppose that as they continue to push the F1TV service (not in the UK sadly..) this sort of thing does make sense. With the online service it will probably be very simple to turn this stuff on/off as desired.

I think like others, I enjoy watching the race uncluttered on the big screen, and my phone or tablet on the live timing and data. If in the future these new graphics/overlays can be turned on/off as I watch, 'some' of it could be useful.

I'm open minded... Just not very excited by this, especially if it's hard coded I to the official stream. Has to be optional - it's not reasonable to force people to watch a live race feed augmented with graphics floating over the cars.

This, for me, was the final signal to sit down in front of the TV and get ready for the race.

You'd have thought that with all the media technology we have these days, you'd be able to customise graphics by now to keep everyone happy slightly less grumpy.
You definitely can - but in this case I fear AWS want to show off how clever their technology is to every viewer.

As they say, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should..

Did they even use any of this new stuff during the race this weekend? I didn't notice if they did.
They had more than usual on the halo overlay, I think g-metre and back facing view from the 360 cam..

The other stuff we saw in the preview video etc is to be phased in gradually this season. Presumably so they can work out at which point viewers start to complain "stop putting extra st all over my screen"!

This is the rollout:

The first of these, which will be in place for the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix, will offer fans a 'Car Performance Score'.

This will be based on a number of statistics relating to the car's strengths including power, grip, downforce and drag. There will be four core metrics on offer: Low-Speed Cornering, High-Speed Cornering, Straight Line and Car Handling.

From the second race at Silverstone in August, which is known as the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, there will be an Ultimate Driver Speed Comparison to help compare current drivers from the past. The data runs back to 1983.

From the Belgian Grand Prix, a High-Speed/Low-Speed Corner Performance graphic will allow fans to see how well drivers tackle high speed corners (those above 175kph/109mph), and slow speed (below 125mph/78 mph).

In the second half of the season, F1 and AWS are planning to roll out three different graphics: one for Driver Skills Rating, one for Car/Team Development and Overall Season Performance and a final one for Qualifying and Race Pace Prediction Graphic.

The scores have been on f1.com site for at least the last few years..

I really don’t understand the fuss..
The data is great, more the better. Being hard coded in to the world stream less good! It's not clear either if the graphics will be floating above the cars as in the promo vid or whether that was just to illustrate why the data can help understand the cars performance.

If the graphics start to take over the screen and aren't optional, that would be annoying.
