Porsche 911 Gets LS1 V8 Transplant

Detroit muscle meets German engineering

V8 engine. Porsche 911. It's fair to say that these two phrases are not easy bedfellows; the Porsche 911 is as synonymous with six cylinders - preferably of the horizontally opposed variety - as the British are with Queuing. We just wouldn't have it any other way.

But there are always those who like to mess with the status quo. One such fellow is '1dirtyZ' of LS1tech forums, who is in the process of slotting an LS1 corvette V8 into a Porsche 996 Turbo.

But before the Porsche purists cry foul and walk away from their computers in disgust, 1dirtyZ (shall we call him Mr Z?) is not exactly butchering a pristine 911. Instead, this automotive Dr Frankenstein has taken a written-off 996 Turbo, the victim of an engine fire, and brought new life to it, keeping the four-wheel drivetrain, but shoehorning in an LS1 lump.

Yes, some will call it sacrilege, but this car was only going to moulder away to nothing - and it was a Tiptronic anyway, so it's surely better this way.

Mr Z hasn't finished the project yet (there's at least a rear bumper yet to go on), but you can have a look at progress so far in the videos posted below...

Was trying to resist posting but too hard.

For starter who by a Tiptronic 911 Turbo - Ok this is Porker fault to make then for mostly the yank market (that can't grasp gear changing at the best of times).

On the LS1 swap. No idea if it will work, but it will need at least a blower to get an LS1 (~340bhp but much better torque than most 911 lumps though maybe not he Turbo) up to say 450+. I'd have gone for an LS6 or 2 as the lowerest spec for this and preferably a grunty LS3 or the admittedly pretty expensive (even second hand in the States) LS7.

Not seen the vids - but from the comments does not sound promising. Let hope their build skills are better than there Donutting!
a cammed and tuned LS1 with sone nice headers should push over 450bhp easy. dont forget this is only a terster to se if it works. no point dropping $20K woth of engine into an untested set now is there!

I love it when people do this kind of stuff smile if the car was pretty much dead, (and I love the 911), then bully for him.

Anyone got a Noble M12 GTO3 engine I can have for my Mondeo estate?
You can get a turbo kit for the 3.0ltrs from the US. its a single turbo and some run upto about 400bhp. after that you would need to get a built bottom end (forged rods and pistons) to take much more power. The noble guys have problems with the 5speed gear boxes at much iover 400lbsft of torque. 6 speed sare much stronger but still need atention if you are pushing higher power.
