Best used car under 4k?

Haven't had the best car history from being very very poor and so picking the conviently cheap used cars,

I've now just seen my 4th car in two years die after the head completly went a couple of weeks ago. (rover 25, whats new there)

I've come into a windfall and just wonder what all you folks would say is the best/most reliable used car under £4k?

as to what car i'm looking for, economical and low insurance is best but still... it has to shift when i need her too.

mondeo is out of my insurance range

how are the younger renault meganes (Hatchbacks 04 onwards)? did have coupe a few months ago, but it was aged and so MOT was a complete disaster. how do the phase two's fair? is there much of a difference?
