So, my car is up for sale at £15k. Some guy texts me and says he's interested.
Apparently, he just sold his E92 M3 and needs something small. After about ten calls and texts between us, today he finally offered me... wait for it, £12k. Yes, £12k! rolleyes

I mean, seriously? My local dealer would take it for a fair bit more than that!

fking timewasters!

I'd say that's a reasonable starting bid myself.
I don't mean to sound rude, but how is that "reasonable" when even my local dealer could offer me a fair bit higher than that?

Offers are always welcomed, but £12k is just taking the p*ss really!

So, has your local dealer actually offered you more than £12,000?

Like Chicarito said, it's a starting bid, negotiate with the guy and see what happens!
Yes, and it's not just one dealer. Three dealers that I've phoned up have offered me more than £12,000.

Yes, but the guy on the phone did say that he prefers mine because it's red and it's got full leather.

Looking at Autotrader, the problem with the OP's price is that for £15k you can get a 2010 Cooper S from a mini dealer. One presumes for less than that with a cheeky offer...
At £15k, none of the cars at any of the main dealers is a facelifted model.

Well, it turned out the guy is genuine. We agreed on a price last night and he insisted that we deal today. The car was sold this morning.

Thank you all for the feedback!

Fair enough - I'm not familiar with the brand. What does the facelift give you on top of a pre-facelift car?
Apart from the minor cosmetic differences, it has a new engine with 184bhp.

But what HAS your local dealer offered you for a straight sale, not a px? Bottom line is, that's your bottom line. But until you get the offer, you wont know.
And your car is almost certainly worth less than you think it is!
In none of my posts did I say that the price that dealers are offering me is a PX price. All the prices I've been quoted have been for a straight sale.

It's the percentage that counts, isn't it? In that regard, I think I've done pretty well.

He has not seen the car before the sale nor did he leave a deposit.

I might have been unreasonable in my previous posts and I do apologise for that. This is the first time I've sold a car privately and I'd have thought that anyone who's genuinely interested in the car would have offered me at least the trade price to start with.

The guy who bought it didn't see the car nor did he ask for any extra pictures, and my initial thought was "here's another timewaster". He called me last night and offered me £12k, which I refused straight away and made him a return offer. He left it at that and sent me another offer via text a couple of hours later, and a call back to him sealed a deal.
