Vehicle showing as Cat D

A quandry a friend is currently dealing with.
Ok, so you bought a used car 3 years ago from a main dealer and were assured the vehicle was HPI clear. The vehicle was approx 12 mths old at the time of purchase. Fast forward to today and you have gone to part ex this car at another main dealer (different marque) only to be told the vehicle has come back as a Cat D.
A call to HPI confirms the status but also shows that the car was 'written off' 12 mths after purchase - the vehicle has never been subject to any insurance claim within the period of ownership.
HPI are checking records but what else to do...??
