Years ago I used to be a Volvo boy, I knew everything about them. I have not had one since 2005.

Thinking now about an XC 60. Loooking for a used example with about 20k in my pocket - but that could stretch for the right car.

The car will be used daily on a commute of about 6 miles but every weekend it will need to handle a 260 mile round trip on A roads and a bit of motorway. Its going to be half city, half country car. not off roading but it will see farm tracks and possibly snow.

The A roads will include Scotland's A75, so its going to have to be decent at overtaking.

Ideally I want as much gear as possible on it, but if something newer with less kit came at the same price, I would be interested.

I guess the D5 is a bit long in the tooth as it wasaround back when I used to buy Volvos. It. Was a decent motor back then I recall I would quite like low tax and decent consumption. What are the Drive models all about?

Finally R Design spec. Is it just cosmetic or do you get better equipment, uprated handling etc?

Lots of questions I know.

I'd really like to know if they are any good and get my head around the models before I approach a garage.

Cheers, Dan.

I have a Mazda CX 7 now and really love it. 2.3 petrol, great performance for what it is.

I really fancy something that doesn't do 28MPG on a good day, and desn't cost so much to tax. Its 4 years old now, I like the diesel CX but Mazda are stopping imports, or may have done so already.

It isn't a common car and I worry about parts availability long term. I had to wait 5 weeks for a turbo and several days for a replacement screen, that was on a car in production. Roll on a year or two and I can see simple things like becoming a pain to source.

Getting something older than 4 years seems a bit of a false econmy, as I already have a 4 year old car and at least I know its history. It rules out things like Range Rovers sadly.

As for the XC 90 SWMBO will be using the car the most and she doesn't like them.

The CX5 does seem like a good car. Not sure how much smaller than the CX7 it is though.

I am also not to happy about buying a big Mazda new. I got the CX7 not long after launch and though I got a good price, by christ did it depreciate. It has sort of levelled out now with prices staying OK for the past years or so.

Plus having two Mazdas, I have an MX5 Mk3.5 I quite fancy something different. As i said, I used to be really into Volvos having had 360 GLTs 440 Turbo, 740 940 turbo and a brace of V40 T4s in the past. I just like the brand. I grew up with Volvo.

Mind you, I looked at an X3 parked up in the next road to me today. Nice looking car.

Does anyone know what lifespan is left in the XC60 and the X3 for that matter. How long before they go out of production?

Is it a relative of the Kuga? What about engines?
