Hi guys,

I've bought myself a new mercedes SLK 2012, 1 week ago. I have a private plate, I'm not going to exactly state what the plate is but it's similar to "10 LA", so in that format.

I'm just wondering shall I cover my 12 plate up by putting the private plate on or what?

What are your opinions?

Yes, great plate, put it on.
Hmm, but I've asked some people and they said "Don't put it on, put it on in a years time and show off the 12 plate"

Really don't know what to do! confused

Plus the plate cost me a bomb too, so I just don't want it on retention or something for a year because it will seem like a waste.

So you've got a brand new car, and a great (valuable) plate - put the plate on the car!

If you leave it as a 12 reg, some people might think it's not yours, just leased or on crippling finance. If it's got your plate on, you're showing everyone you are proud of your car AND your plate.

Just my 2p-worth...

Oh, and pics please! smile
I'm picking the car up in 2 weeks, I wanted red bengal leather as the interior so they had to manufacturer fit it in. So picks will be soon.

And It thought about leasing it, but the in the long run it will be more expensive. So I'm buying it out right.

Also bearing in mind I someone who is 20, so opinions may differ across the ages.

I am also 19.

Just wanted opinions, thats all.

I initially wanted to put the plate on, but my friend just said and it made me think.

Why is this relevant to what number plate you have on your car?

We're not impressed or jealous, just do what you like and stop caring so much about what others think of you.

If this is the future of our country we are fked.
Read the thread..

My friend to said to 'show off', not me.

I stated his age too, why haven't you quoted that part too?

Please do wait 2 weeks, I shall deliver pics to you with the number plate on!

Besides, my number plate is currently on another vehicle therefore it'll take a couple of weeks for it to be transferred on.

If you can't make your own decisions regarding a fking number plate how the hell can you expect to get through life.
What?

I asked for opinions.

You do know opinions and decisions are two completely different things right?

Imagine having to make decisions like this at the tender age of 19, it must be really awful. Can you sleep at night?
No I can't sleep, but when I do sleep I have nightmares of the number '12' following me everywhere I go and blank number plates everywhere!! frown

Give the guy a break - he's 19 with a brand new SLK. Whether it means anything to the middle aged on here is not the point, when we were all 19 we would have loved to 'exhibit' our success - peacocking is what teenage lads do.

To the OP - do what you want, you can't lose either way.
Thanks

I could put it on retention for a year and see how things go, but then again I spent a lot on the plate, so I don't want it going to waste.

1. You don't know me
2. You don't know my occupation
4. The price difference between a brand new SLK and A3 differ..
3. Your post hasn't helped me in the slightest

Yes, but why do you need opinions from others? Why can't you make your own opinion up and decide from there?

You could be getting an opinion from a nerdy IT consultant with a diesel Octavia - and this being OP, it's even more likely!
Yeah, from a nerdy IT consultant who has an interest in cars. Hence why we're on PH. Your comment would of been valid if I posted the question on a different topic forum altogether!

Cheers to the supportive people.

And I've chosen the SLK because it's a 1.8, handles nice, looks good and is pretty fast!

The insurance on it is also not that bad.

Bang on thumbup

There's no shame in the lad being proud of his new ride & wanting to talk about it on a motoring forum.

Well done OP, I look forward to the pics cool
Thanks. I'll bump this thread up in 2 weeks with pics.

Im still truely baffled by the ops decision process.
Cayman - one of the most desirable (if not the most) cars on the road.
Insurance on the Cayman for a 19 year old is too expensive compared to the SLK, as the cayman has a bigger engine. They are the same insurance group though.. confused

YOU HAVE JUST BOUGHT A NEW CAR, YES!?
Yeah. The guy above me just asked why I picked the SLK over the Cayman so I explained.

I'm also fairly sure that the OP confirmed earlier in the thread that he had bought the car rather than leasing it as it's a better deal?
He's 19 - the chances of him having £30k in cash sloshing around just waiting to be spent on a brand new SLK are perhaps 1 in 100. Whereas the chances of him having enough spare cash each month to contract hire one are perhaps 1 in 2.

Regardless of what he claims it's fairly obvious which is most likely, especially as he previously had a thread asking about... contract hiring an SLK.
I can confirm that I've purchased the vehicle because in the long run it'll save me money.

I don't give two sts if you believe me or not mate.

But for those who have asked pics', I shall deliver once it's ready to pick up in 2 weeks.
