Or do people just lie hoping that people come and have a look at it but don't notice?

Surely if you're looking for a 3 series Sport with a straight 6 then you're not going to fall for an SE with a 2.0 litre 4 pot in it?

I thought it was going to be a thread about someone not being sure if they had an Audi or a Renault or something, not the possible misuse of the word "sport".
It's also not a 320.

So instead of 318Ci SE he has put 320Ci Sport.

Deliberately misleading I'd have said since he must surely know what is written on the V5 and what he has been insuring etc.

It's more likely he's trying it on or a bit of a dimwit.

Either way, I sent him a quick message letting him know that the errors in his advert may be putting potential purchasers off.

BMW and their pesky number bks wink
Yeah, that was the start of the rot as the 318 used to be a 1.8, then a 1.9, then a 2.0 and the 320 was a 2.2 straight 6.

Now if you look at the 3 series, you'll be getting either a 2.0 or a 3.0 regardless of whether you buy a 318/320/325/330/335 etc (in E9x form anyway, I'm not au fait with the latest gen and their engines).

Think they've brought the 328i back with the new new shape!
If its the same engine as in the new Z4 then it'll be a turbo 2.0 4-pot?

Me for one. I booked my OH's car in for a service this morning and couldn't remember whether it was 306, 307 or 308 diesel such is the level of apathy I have towards the car.
That's fair enough but if she asked you to sell it for her would you make an effort to find out?

Only thing sports about it is the set of MV1 wheels from the pre-facelift sport.

Seems bog-standard apart from the electric memory seats (pretty sure they weren't standard, certainly weren't on my 318Ci (actual) Sport back in the day. Weird that someone would spec them and nothing else? They are handy though.

They come with a nice spec as standard though to be fair with the climate, rear PDC, cruise etc.

How a 328i signifies a 2.0 Turbo however, is anyone's guess.. confused
I presume they're now needing to maintain the pecking order. i.e. the person who buys the 328i would not like it badged up 320 when the bloke with a slower/cheaper car is rolling around with (as an example, not sure if they make it) 325 on the back?

They also, presumably, already have a 320 in the range?

It's bizarre really, the 116/118/120/123d are all 2 litre in various stages of tune.

130i and 135 are 3 litre.

Although in your defence I think the 116 WAS a 1.6 until 2008 or 2009.

Or equally he is not 18 and the word 'sport' does not give him an erection?
I would deifnitely 'fall' for that. I would go and see it and it wouldn't make the blindest bit of difference to me if the word 'sport' was present. The car would still be the car I can see and drive.
And if someone like you said after the event "Wow, are you seriously stupid enough to have thought that was a 'sport'?" I would just look bewildered and ask if you seriously believe it matters
So you don't realise, you nip onto Parkers etc to get a price, scroll down to 320 Sport, wow, this one really is cheap, I'd best have a poke around. So you visit, check it out, runs well and you expect to run it for a year and sell it. So you offer him asking, after all it's worth it.

I'd suggest that the sport bit is not the only misleading bit, he's also called it a 320.

I rather think you're in the minority when it comes to whether 'sport' matters or not, especially on a car where the word sport means more than a sport badge.

Maybe the word sport DOES give him an erection and he expects similar of others?

Fact remains, the 320 sport is worth more than the 318 SE and its unfair for a potential purchaser to be thinking he's getting a good deal.

Caveat emptor applies.

It also isn't an SE, it is a base 318ci convertible with sport alloys.

You learn something new every day. I didn't know they came in something other than SE and Sport. So that'll be an ES then?

No no, they never classified a standard coupe or convertible as an 'SE'. They are either a ci Sport, or just the standard ci model

ES in E46 form is below an SE saloon, no climate control, cruise, or electric rear windows.
Gotcha thanks! It's fair to say that the standard Ci model is equivalent to the Saloon SE then?

Bit firmer and a bit lower, definitely worth mentioning that in your ad.

Someone will be able to put you in the right direction but on the BMW website somewhere you can put your VIN number and it will give you the build sheet for your car.

If you are in possession of this and put all the details down properly then any purchaser is sure to have more confidence.

As I said in my email, it was just a quick one to make sure you weren't missing out on potential purchasers beer

Pretty sure most is standard, even under the options.

Not sure they came with the dipping mirrors but that was probably as part of the memory seats.

Still, tidy it up a bit and put it with the advert. Make sure all spelling and grammar looks spot on and really make it appeal to any potential purchaser, and as if you know what you're talking about, have a passion for the car etc.

Thats my advice anyway!

Not sure what he used but on the same topic, the 'My Car Check' app on the iPhone (perhaps on other phones too) is brilliant for this sort of thing.
