Much against my better judgement I'm getting close to buying a Ford again. 2.0 Peugeot diesel engine has a good reputation, owners reviews generally good. But..

Previously had an 04 1.8 tdi Focus estate which in 60k miles needed new turbo (at 17k miles), 4 alternators, suspension collapse at front (once) back (twice), new engine management system, injectors and door locks (!); parental 1996 Galaxy company car from new spent total of 12 months/ 5 years in the garage for various faults; GF 1999 Cougar failed powersteering, repeated fuelling problems, dashboard failure and premature brake failure etc (but it was 7 years old on purchase).

Any opinions gratefully received!

Vag products out completely! Octavia 1.9 tdi company car catastrophic engine failure at 2.5 yrs/63k miles, colleagues golf with same engine same failure at 3.5 years/ 55k. In neither case did fiddling vw or skoda want to know and personally know 3 other people with similarly affected vehicles and no vag interest. Google bxs or bls and Vag tdi.

2.0 Vag cr also meant to be pretty problematic from forums/ various friends experience but to be honest given vag's behavior with the 1.9s with a known fault I just don't want one even if they were ok.

Other thing in the running is an older e61 520d pre April 2007 (to avoid chain cam problems) but all the sensibly priced ones seem to have sold and running costs would be higher even with use of indys and judicious breakers for parts.
