You guys must have experienced this phenomenon. I seem to get it most when out on the bike, but had it in the car as well.

You pull out to overtake. There's a car coming the other way, but they're at a safe distance. When you're back onto your own side, the oncoming driver gives you a flash followed by some hand gestures. I assume to congratulate me on a splendid overtake.

My response is usually to do an overly cheerful wave back, or see how many headlight flashes I can get back at them before they pass me. My PB is 5 flashes back.

Anyone else experienced this?

I've only seen people flash and get angry when the manouvre was unsafe. I overtake regularly but am yet to have any such issues
I'm still here, and they've never had to brake. The only reason I can see is that they're just not used to the power of a modern Superbike. As I say, I can had it in the car before too...

It's only your opinion that they haven't had to break or shouldn't have needed to brake. Some people are easily alarmed/nervous/extremely risk averse, etc but if it's happening to you a lot it would suggest you need to get some feedback on your riding style.
Well, you'd see the bonnet dip if they'd braked Shirley?

To this day I've never seen a bonnet dip. Indicating they haven't braked?

I wonder what the angry flashing handwavers believe they will possibly achieve by their actions...
Wearing out their headlight bulbs?

You'd see a bonnet dip if they braked fairly heavily but maybe they didn't, they just felt the need to get off the gas momentarily and were about to brake? That would be enough to alarm plenty of nervous Nellies. I'm sure you see what I'm getting at. If it's an occasional thing I'd put it down to chance, but if it was a common occurrence, like if you were regularly finding yourself in road rage situations, it may be time to look in the mirror. I'm sure it's the former.
Perhaps. smile

On a recent NSL overtake I received no fewer than 12 headlamp flashes from an approaching Volvo after I had returned to the left side of the road!!!

I have watched the dashcam videos (front and rear) several times and still can't understand the problem.

Wow, 12 is impressive. Looks like we may have a new champion.

Maybe there is a regional element coming into play?
Maybe there is. I should point I live in Bedfordshire. The Daily Mail's heartland.

Has anyone done something like this and then have the car behind refuse to overtake. One time in the Mendips I almost came to a halt trying to let some Jaguar past, he just didn't seem to get it.
It's a difficult one. My main experience of this is on the bike. I've had indicate left and lift off slightly perfectly safely, which is fine (if a little pointless).

I've also had people so desperate to let me pass that they will literally drive in the verge showering the front of the bike with crap, and their car will skip around in the dirt, until I drop back or go past.

I appreciate the thought, but if you're going to drive along the verge just before a blind corner, even though you've made the effort to pull over, I'm still not going to get past.

Never really had it in the car.
