A matter of taste

So, I'm about to sell my car and of course now I am looking at what I want next (Don't worry, not a what car thread in disguise) I'm finding myself drawn to older quick(ish) saloons, Renault 21 turbo, Peugeot 405 Mi-16, Nissan Primera GT etc..
I guess it's all those years watching supertourers that's made me always want something that's boxy and unassuming, yet fast enough to surprise.
Everyone I speak to thinks I'm mad, why don't I go for a wee sports car or a hot hatch, or in most cases something new. I don't really know tbh, I just fancy something that others don't, especially if they are well regarded but don't quite get a popular following, call me contrary if you must but I know what I like.
Does anyone else have this affliction or do you find yourself going for the newer sleeker offerings rather than the overlooked slightly ungainly ugly ducklings.

Most people's idea of a car is 'new as possible', and the idea of something older and interesting is completely alien to their un imaginative narrow minds.
Sister in law told me i was selfish and irresponsible for buying a impreza, even though i bought it for family use as a winter hack.
Agree with your choices except the Primera, personally, i could never love that.
Totally agree!, however the Primera is a surprising car, I had one as my first second hand car and loved it dearly, even though it cost me a lot to get back to a good standard it handled well and sounded greatSister in law told me i was selfish and irresponsible for buying a impreza, even though i bought it for family use as a winter hack.

What about a 309 GTi? Extremely capable car & much less obvious than a 205.
309's are on the list for sure but to be honest finding a good one is hard work, plus it's a little small, I run a small convenience store and therefore I require a good amount of space. The ATR is very nice I especially like the interior (I have a thing for black and green) but nearly 5k is strong money if I were in the market for a car around that price range I'm afraid I would go for an E36 M3.

Wooft if my current car wasn't going to cost (Likely) over a grand to get to sales standard (I.e the mot and the PAS fixed plus 6 months VED) I'd have just about enough for that, I'm looking mainly at getting something I can run for a year or two and save up for something properly special.
