Removing chrome from wheels to paint or powdercoat, who?
Discussion
As above I have a set 18" Saleen Chrome plated alloy wheels that are peeling and pitted, I want to strip the chrome and repaint or powdercoat, anyone know who does this?
From searching sandblasting isn't that good and chemical dipping muratic acid or hydrochloric acid or using reverse electrolysis is the way forward but I haven't found out who does this, most wheel refurbishers only talk about not rechroming wheels, I just want them unchromed for paint.
Any pointers.

I had the same problem a few years ago. 12x19 and 10.5x18 chrome wheels.
I phoned a lot of companies who did electroplating in the south and none of them would take it on. Their excuses were that they did not have a tank big enough, and only did small components - which I doubt was the real reason.
Ended up with media blasting and paint from two different companies. The media blasting did not work at all, just removing the loose chrome, which the painter then used multiple coats of etch primer to cover the edges, and then painted. Needless to say they looked st and chipped terribly before the remaining chrome started to peel beneath the paint.
So, yes you do need a proper chrome strip process but sorry, I can't help with a contact.

phone here http://fifepowdercoating.com/ and ask to speak to mike or junior. they do wheels for cars all over the country.
Thanks for all the hints and tips, I did a bit of googling when Roo mentioned Shotblasting, i've found this company 'Maldon Shotbasting and Powder Coating' http://ctc-powder-coating.co.uk which is not to far from London I'll give them a call when I'm nearer to getting around to that job. Or the others contacts mentioned if they can't do it.
