Toyota teases new Supra (again)

Lone image reveals new details of a 'modern racing concept' lined up for the Geneva show

Opponents of shadowy teaser images look away now, Toyota has released another glimpse of its long awaited Supra successor, and it's about as murky as these things get. The bulbous ducktail and double-bubble roof previously seen in spy shots are both evident here, although a couple of new features are also apparent.

The rear haunches appear considerably more defined than in previous pictures, closer to those on the FT-1 concept, with a sharper transition into the roof resulting in a more purposful stance than the previously chunky design.

There's also a bloody great wing on the back, perhaps hinting at a more track-orientated variant. As we already have confirmation that the Supra will be sold in four trim levels under the Gazoo banner, a bewinged range-topping Supra GRMN isn't too great a stretch.

The new Supra is expected to be sold in coupe form only, alongside the convertible-only BMW Z4/5 with which it shares a platform. Petrol and hybrid powertrains have been mooted, although whichever trim level and engine combination you spec, an automatic gearbox is believed to be the only transmission option.

Whatever final form the finished car takes, we'll have a little longer to wait: Toyota's pronounced "commitment to bringing its most iconic sports car back to the market" doesn't appear to be contingent on timeliness - the official unveil isn't expected now until early next year.

I like to try different cars/brands, so get the price-point right and this really could be my next car...if it looks the part, of course!

ETA - image of potential looks...we can only hope!

Teases? Is PH turning into a motorised version of the daily fail? What next, bikini body pics of editorial contributors? hehe

If it looks like this its straight in my basket! love that!
I am totally with you...but I can't help feeling that this may be yet another 'bait and switch' by the rumour mill/teaser factory. Looking at the camo'd mule, it looks a VERY long way from the car we both like in other guesswork imagery.

Disappointingly so.

All these concept predictions that come out for various cars, really feel like the old Bullseye "Here's what you could have won..." scenario.

And whilst I know that it's not always the fault of the manufacturers (although in this case Toyota themselves bait us with things like the FT-1), they don't make life any easier for themselves with stupid teaser images and hints that things could almost be like the amazing concept we've already seen....could it...could it really? Well, no. It's going to look worse.

It's not always bad - just not as good as we had hoped.

Just thought of the perfect analogy - imagine finding out you were about to hook up with a Minogue sister....you get all the teasers..."It's a Minogue!"..."She's had hit singles!!"...oooo come on Kylie....then you find out it's Dani. I mean, yeah that's all great and stuff and who could argue with hooking up with Dani?? But I'd still be a little pissed that it wasn't Kylie.

Yep this is what I'm afraid of too.
Ditto.

That grey FT-1 concept above is probably one of the most desirable 'cars' (quotes because that's a render) I've seen in years. At anywhere up to £60k, I would really struggle to not go straight round and place a deposit.

As for styling I hate to say it but there is no way it's looking like an FT-1. If it does then I will happily place a deposit but as this is a BMW partnership I don't have high hopes after seeing what they did with the 8 series from the concept stage.
Concept cars really are the ultimate bait and switch. And we all for it every time despite our better selves.
