Came across this last night and thought it was very interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8xaniiSYZo

Basically it's the guy that did the first jailbreak on the iphone and also the PS3. He is developing a system that taps into sensor already on cars and then uses vision software on a phone that is being used as a dash cam to retrofit self driving capabilities to cars. As it stands the system is about level 2 (what Tesla Autopilot is) but they're developing it and using crowd sourced data to aid the system learn. Basically you can download an app and then set your phone up in your car as a dashcam and the drives are sent to their servers for the system to machine learn how to drive. Very interesting approach and technology. More info here:

"...that taps into sensors already on cars", "phone that is being used as a dashcam"...?

So, basically, it's going off parking binglies and a single forward-facing cam?

What could possibly go wrong...?

Fertheloveofgawd.

Even they don't quite bill it as self-driving if you look closely. It's simply replacing the existing lane assist and adaptive cruise software.

hahahahahaha, no one's suggesting it's a fully fledged self driving system yet, but that's the road they're on and this is arguably a more innovative and efficient way of getting there.

Suggest you watch this to get a bit more of the idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqdYbwY9vPU&t=...

Well, apart from the thread title and the comparison to Tesla Autopilot.
So you think Autopilot is a fully fledged self driving system....? Do you understand the levels of self driving?

Yes, thank you.

And this appears to be no more than a simple software-swap for L1 lane assist and adaptive cruise.
What more does Autopilot do at the moment?

The point is it's an interesting way of approaching the issue of self driving and as more sensors are added to new cars, as they will be, it can potentially be used to augment these systems to produce self driving capabilities in mainstream cars at a fraction of the cost of bespoke solutions.

That's the bit that terrifies me.
Why because you'd rather pay more for something...?
