Porsche 908 Short-Tail: Pic of the Week

Porsche's stunningly beautiful 908 is going up for sale and is eligible to race...

Formula 1 is back this weekend. We look forward to seeing if McLaren does better than last year with Renault as its engine supplier. Or if Mercedes will sweep all before it as its dominance continues. Expect to see next week's pic of the week to be Australian-based.

This, on the other hand, has nothing to do with Formula 1. The Porsche 908 Works 'Short-Tail' coupe is one of a handful of 908s to wear the Kurzheck body style and one of only two to be raced in the 1968 Spa 1000km.

Piloted by Vic Elford and Jochen Neerpasch - both winners in 907s - it struggled in the inclement weather crashing into a telephone pole. It was retired, returned to the factory, disassembled and put into storage before being bought by a Swiss collector.

Decades later, it was tracked down by an American collector who had it painstakingly restored for the 2004 Rennsport Reunion - fixing that shunt as well as bringing the 8-cylinder boxer engine back to life. With 320hp and 232lb ft to pull 589kg, you'd imagine that it's rather lively.

It retains its original repaired chassis, reserviced engine and is revered as one of the cars that furthered the development of the 'LH' version which became one of Porsche's most successful race cars of all time. It is eligible to race at Rennsport VI this September and hopefully, the new owner will feel obliged to take it along.
