haha some great replies on here, and yeah its more of a case of things are bit tight these days so wasting some savings on an old car seems very stupid to her at this time. partly she is right it depends if the car is in good order and if a sensible price is agreed because i wont be paying his asking price anyway as i went to look at it once and it seem a little over valued for condition.

So what is this 'old and small' car you want to buy a Mini?

Helps to understand so we can give a reasoned argument.

wow quite blown away by all the replies on here. yeah i did drive the MGB i need to reinspect it but yeah i wasn't to fooled by outside shiny paint work it was restored in the 90s and then stored away for 23 yrs. The guy struggling to sell it at 3k then again at 2k...maybe for good reason.... probably because there no telling how good the body work restoration was done? and being so long ago...i took a look under the car and the sills were ok but were some rust signs. was also a bit on the chassis that did look far to rusty but other then the other bits looked fine. I was planning to go for a 2nd viewing and check it even further but i've had same advise with MGB that the rust is a major major issue. (it def wasnt 100% under the car) normally my wife lets me spend my money on what i want. last year I bought a new camera and even shown her the mazda mx5 you mentioned on an earlier post.... she laughed and said where would we put our 2yr old son? The reason for my post is we went to see mgb together and she was just telling me what an old wreck it looked. (i respect her opinion....and it still my own money not hers) for me the reason i was looking for mgb in blue was i had lot fond memories of my grandfathers mgb as a kid and sadly when he passed away the family sold it off, I always regret they did that. now i am old enough to get one the same i was looking to see what i could find... it seems they are now to old or require far to much maintenance so i am now very torn if I should even bother to do the 2nd viewing or just forget it now.

i willl post some photos of the mgb but yeah we not loaded with money so restoration would be out of the question. and yeah it wasnt exactly rust free.... and put this way my grandfathers mgb in 90s was in mint condition and this one had to be restored in the mid 90s.... it says a lot of how bad it was back then. maybe i am answering my own question haha laugh . the guy wont budge past 2k either and in my view i think its more £1500 car given it might need work. I think the main rust concern would be sills and chassis but without an expert looking at it then ut would be hard to know. he did have carpet lifted that day he very eager to tell me how good body work was constantly. My wife did say that day if it was great condition at 2k . (which would never happen at that price) she been onboard but still hated how small it was.

i say there a good chance the sills were rotting on ones i saw the outter body shell looked fine but when i got on the floor look under it the sills def had rust on them, how bad it was is hard to tell without going for a 2nd look and look further but i guess really you rather see zero rust right?

Do it, dude, but speak with her, get her motivated, get her on your side.

Car looks nice but do your homework. In my experience of classic cars, there's nothing better than original metal and original paint. Doesn't matter if it needs an engine or gearbox rebuild, you'll probably want to do that anyway, but there's no substitute for original metal, preferably in it's original paint.

And don't listen to these people saying "money-pit" etc. You will spend money undoubtedly. But over time you should get all that money back plus more. Buy right and you'll be OK.

Will this be your daily driver?
i would like to use it as much as i could maybe not every day but def at least once or twice a week along with the other car, yeah its very hard to get my wife on side with it. susposed to be viewing it again tomorrow then make a decision. i guess main concern is how bad is the rust while he claims its rust free were some bits near windscreen that were rusted on body work, small patch by the bonnet lid and some bits under the car were rusting, could all be minor bits or could be really really bad, he showed loads of photos of it being restored in the 90s but means nothing after 23yrs even lying in a garage it could of since re rusted under the body

sorry i sent the message via my phone but for those of you that struggle with text based english post i re write it now that i am at home on my laptop.

Basically he wanted £2000 for the car and £40 for the water pump he had to replace this week on it...totalling to £2040....I asked him would he accept less money at £1650 he said no.... I did not see the point in driving for 3 hours for a second viewing when my wife pointed out lot more rust than i even spotted. Plus when i checked under the car there was a rusty parts on the chassis....how bad? its hard to tell but it wasnt clean rust free and painted like it should be.... Was i blinded by the memory of my grandfathers MGB that was same as this car? yes i def was. did i see sense? well basically i got a lot of information from various people and videos about MGB's.... and the bottom line seems to be that there easy cars to rust and require a ton of money to put right.

If it was a case of gambling a grand or £1500 i might of gone for it but my feeling was i rather keep my £2000 money and look for a better car instead. I just not sure i trusted the seller that much anymore, he keeps claiming it was rust free and was restored, it was not rust free and it was restored in someone garage 23years ago and had 5 previous owners in the 1980s. i think he lost my respect when he was asking me for the £40 for the water pump. (not my problem if the water pump went before it was sold)
