as it says above I honestly can't get really excited about hot-hatches (indeed any hatches), especially the newer 5 door only ones. In all honesty, I appreciate them for what they can do but they really don't tug at my heart-strings and I find them totally uninspiring to look at.

Am I alone in this?

I''m going to double down on my sin here and say that I've never liked them. When they were 1st a big thing if I was offered a choice between an XR/GTi and a B-GT (actually would an MGB-GT V8 be a hot-hatchscratchchin) I'd have taken the B every time - before anyone says it I know that the B wouldn't have seen which way the XR went on a straight bit of road, let alone the twisties. As my motoring moved on I've loved coupes rather than hatches and it's never changed, indeed up until the other week( I've taken on my son's 'dynamique' with a throbbing 1150cc's of power!) I've never even owned a hatch

Actually both V8RX7 and kambites make a good point there. I've (for better or worse) never had to worry about a semi-practical car, maybe that's coloured my view

My Puma was an absolute joy - light, responsive and a study in maintaining momentum - you could drive them at 10/10ths everywhere. I enjoyed my Puma more than my M3.
TBH I'd be more than happy with a Puma - then again I'd not thought of that as a hatch in all honesty

interestingly enough I saw 2 hatches today that I do like quite a bit. For some reason I never really thought of the 1st one as a hot-hatch, the second is though through and through and even at 14 years old still quite appeals...

So what, if they drive well.

Looks of a hatch is missing the point. Utility vehicles that drive well what's not to like, good for the run to the tip, and a blast back.
regrettably one of my criteria is that (subjective) looks are part of the allure. I may be alone in this but a (for a stupid example) Ssangyong Rhodus could be the best performance car ever made but I'd have no interest - the aesthetics matter. Would someone want to own a magnificent car in every way if it was pink with unicorns and rainbows everywhere? Nothing wrong with any of that but it just doesn't do it for me
