An 838-mile Escort Cosworth heads to auction (again) but our money would be going elsewhere
It's no secret that fast Fords have skyrocketed in value in recent years, but prices do seem to be plateauing, even for some of the most well-preserved examples. Evidence of this comes in the form of a rather sobering example of just how the market has evolved: this particular Ford Escort Cosworth. It's one of the lots in Silverstone Auctions' upcoming Race Retro sale and is valued at £80-£90,000 thanks to its ridiculously low odometer reading of 838 miles.
It also went under the hammer around 15 months ago, when it sold for £91,125 (along with a similarly pristine RS2000 which fetched £97,875). Between then and now, the car has driven just a single solitary mile, which was likely just the distance involved in loading and unloading it from its various auction transports. Perhaps not the money-spinning investment it once was, then, but for a wealthy Ford fan keen on beholding their favourite car every day without losing any money, it still represents an apparently sound purchase.
For those more interested in driving, however, this 51,000-mile example is similarly specced, and can be enjoyed a reasonable amount without wiping 50 per cent off its value. It's estimated at £40-45,000 - a relative bargain, then.
As you might expect, there are plenty of other driver-focussed machines up for grabs, with the likes of this Peugeot 207 THP Spider, Porsche 968 Club Sport and beautiful MGC GTS all joining the Fords on the auction block. Finally, there's this tin top Saab Turbo race car, replete with N24 pedigree - it retired a painstaking 23.5 hours into the race having run as high as ninth. It looks fantastic in that cars-that-should-never-have-been-race-cars kind of way, and should provide plenty of bang for your buck thanks to its £22,500-£27,500 estimate.
