Morning gents,

Looking for some advice on the costings of fitting a new engine to a 2016 Nissan Qashqai. Basically my missus hasn't had her car serviced for almost 3 years and last week it threw a warning light stating oil pressure was low. I told her to contact Nissan directly and get them to recover the car, instead of contacting Nissan she contacted the dealer who told her to top it up with oil and booked the car in for a check over 10 days later.

The car was topped up with oil and everything seemed fine, then a few days later, warning lights, limp mode and then catastrophic failure. The car was then recovered to the dealership by the RAC. Now the car is in with the dealership she has been informed that the engine is seized and it requires a new engine. The dealership quoted £10,500-£11,500 which sounded ridiculously steep. This morning now we have had the itemised invoice for the new engine and it is listed as follows:-

Labour
£880

Parts

5w40 4.6 litres £28.00

Gasket exhaust £15.65

Coolant £32.00

Gaskets/seals/consumables £40.00

turbo.c oil outlet gasket £19.33

Turbocharger oil hose £26.67

Tube turbocharger oil feed £47.30

Tube assy water inlet turbocharger £18.39

Tube assy water outlet turbocharger £85.82

Gasket exhaust manifold £11.75

Manifold exhaust £1,015.16

Engine assy short £6,209.25

Total parts £7,549.32

VAT £1,685.86

Total £10,115.18

Now I know this is her fault for not servicing the vehicle, HOWEVER, these vehicles are renowned for engine/oil troubles as these article state:-
https://www.theguardian.com/money/2017/jan/28/niss...
https://garagewire.co.uk/news/qashqai-owners-speak...
The forums are also riddled with cases of complete engines failing due to oil issues.

So my question is, how can she approach this matter? Can she press Nissan for a "gesture of goodwill" considering the dealer told her to carry on driving the vehicle (after it was topped up with oil)? Also the engine is known to die through similar issues even when serviced? Obviously she is not expecting it to get it done for free but charging her what seems like a high "retail" price for a new engine seems a bit harsh frown

At this point all contact has been via the main dealer. This is her 3rd Qashqai and she has been a customer for 9 years (whether that matters or not I'm not sure - if it was my company it certainly would)

All advice welcomed smile

I have to ask, but why on earth hasn’t it been serviced in three years? Surely at some point the dashboard lit up saying it needed servicing, or are Nissan’s not that sophisticated?
No idea, I've only been with her 9 months or so.

The car has been back and fore the dealer for various electrical related issues but at no point has it been serviced. Why the dealer didn't offer it to her, why the warning lights didn't come on etc I have no idea. All I know is that I have one upset missus. I know Nissan are not obliged to do anything but as a loyal customer I personally would have offered something, she probably would have had another one in November if it didn't fail boxedin

I do find it a bit strange that Nissan want £10k+ for a 1.2 Qashai engine when it was only £7,500 for Ford to replace the engine in my RS wobble

If the car is leased, won't Nissan kick-off if you returned the car with an unrecorded second-hand lump under the bonnet? They will already get hammered returning a car which hasn't been serviced, isn't there a risk that they will hammer them again for a second-hand engine wiping out any saving from going outside the dealer network?
This is also a concern I have.

I have already been quoted £1,400 for a guaranteed fitted engine but ideally it would have been nice to come to an agreement with Nissan.

Loyal customer? If it hadn't failed, she'd have happily dropped completely unserviced and unmaintained nail on them as a part-ex in November...
Dropped? Pretty sure they would have offered her an "appropriate" value for the car as it stood.

Over ten grand for an engine in a small four cylinder car sounds like taking the piss to be honest, I could understand half that but you can buy a whole car for not much more.

It does amaze me that people have the second most expensive thing they own (or lease) and just drive it indefinitely with no thought to the maintenance, partly laziness but also, modern cars tend to just keep going, until they really dont, gone are the days where cars needed fettling every weekend.
I was very surprised at the cost, I thought it would be around £5-7k fitted! Certainly not £3k more than my RS!

In her defense, she has been through a pretty traumatic time the last few years so her car was very low down her list of priorities during this time.

Following the advice here she has accepted that she has to write this off as a very expensive mistake smile

As for the OP, as the man in the household why didn't you service the car for her? Don't be silly about the goodwill gesture.
I was wondering this too,

If the OP is on here and has a Focus RS, one would assume they're 'into' cars.

I can't understand how this was off your Radar OP? Mental note or the cars onboard computer letting her / you know that the car is due a service?

I sort everything out on the Mrs's car, as left to her own devices, it would have no MOT, 4 bald tyres, and like you - a seized engine!
I don't have the RS anymore and I am very much "into" my cars. As I said, I have only been with her 9 months or so, in that time I have had all the brakes changed, tyres done, wipers, tidied the trim up, deep cleaned etc but I just kind of assumed she had always serviced it. Like everyone else here, with a new car I just assume everyone does.

For those wondering, the vehicle has done 26k miles.

The vehicle is now on the back of a truck heading to my mates garage, he's going to have a good look at it. Worst case scenario is £1,400 for a reconditioned engine to be fitted, not too bad smile

Sorry I haven't updated this thread.

We got the Qashqai recovered to my mates garage, he had a look over it and stated straight away "no way that engine's seized". After he took it apart he was then adamant that a new Turbo is all it needed. I agreed to supply a new Turbo and oil feed pipe to see if his theory was correct. Few days later and the little Qashqai is running as sweet as a nut.

Cost of repair:-
£225 for a reconditioned Turbo
£80 for an oil feed pipe
£100 recovery (from main dealer to mates garage)
£530 labour.
Total cost £935.00 eek

Pretty pissed off that the dealership tried to charge her £10k+ for a new engine and turbo furious
