Ford plots new GT announcement at Goodwood
Ford Performance is apparently primed to unveil a new variant of the GT at next month's Festival of Speed
Ford has chosen Goodwood to unveil what we assume is a track-focused variant of the current GT. The new car has been previewed by a teaser pic, and confirmation that the boss of Ford Performance will deliver a special "Ford GT announcement" at a dedicated press conference on the first morning of the 2019 Festival of Speed.
Hermann Salenbauch will be accompanied by the chief technical officer of Multimatic - the firm responsible for actually building the car - which suggests that Ford is poised to deliver news of a production model rather than an addition to its race programme, given the manufacturer has already confirmed withdrawal of its support for the GTE-Pro class after a four-year campaign.
That said, the profile of the new model, which clearly sports a dramatic fixed rear wing and what looks like a roof scoop, bears strong resemblance to the factory-supported Ford Chip Ganassi Racing car - suggesting that its maker has significantly turned up the wick on what was already an extravagantly gifted track car. Interestingly, Ford has not ruled out entering the new WEC hypercar class in 2020/21, and has previously suggested that a category for lookalike prototypes might suit the GT.
Elsewhere, Ford has confirmed that both the Focus ST and the all-new 760hp Mustang Shelby GT500 will be making their UK debut at FoS, alongside Ken Block's Hoonitruck and Escort RS Cosworth, Vaughn Gittin Jnr's Ford Mustang RTR Drift car and the Ford Fiesta WRC car, which will appear on the Goodwood rally stage.
Oh and the #66 Ford GT race car, fresh from Le Mans, will appear as well, which ought to offer a neat side-by-side comparison with whatever the manufacturer has cooking. Another good reason to make your way to West Sussex next month.
