multi car insurance and NCB

Morning All. Just had a quote for a second car on same policy and found that no claims isn't considered for second vehicle. is that normal?
sort of takes the point away. Any recommendations for better ways to insure? extra £1k for a £3k vehicle seems excessive.
I think my main query is - is the NCB applicable only to one car at a time? Apologies if this is all the bleeding obvious, just wanted more experienced thoughts.

That is all very useful. Gone with the expensive version to get car on road but have 14 day cooling off period to shop a little more. Thanks all.
