Lego Nissan GT-R!

Well, if you're stuck for present ideas this festive period, Lego might have just the thing

We never need an excuse to get excited about a new Lego collaboration, but with Christmas around the corner now is an even more thrilling time to learn of a new release. Lego's latest automotive collaboration is with Nissan and, while it may not be a many-thousand-piece Technic kit like some of our favourites, it does recreate a car that PH has a soft spot for.

It was back in the summer of 2016 that Dan had a go in Nissan's bonkers 1,390hp GT-R drift machine. Having cost half a million pounds to build, and fresh from setting a new world record with a barely believably 190mph drift, the 'Spec-D' it ought to have been a rather intimidating prospect. In the end, though, the incredible build was so approachable that Dan declared driving it to be "as fun as anything you can do on four wheels."

The Lego recreation pays tribute to that drift model in a 298-part form that has received the blessing of Mr GT-R himself, Hiroshi Tamura. Nissan's chief GT-R specialist said of the kit: "The GT-R has been part of my life since I was 10 years old. Working with the Lego Group was like awakening my inner 10-year-old self to rediscover what makes the GT-R so special to me. It's amazing how much the LEGO Group's attention to detail reminds me of our own craftsmen."

Speaking of which, Asako Hoshino, Nissan's executive VP, added that the partnership allows everyone the chance to be a `takumi' - the specialized craftsmen that build the GT-R. And once they're done, to play out the Type-D's record-setting antics for themselves too. Good thing that Lego is the world's largest volume tyre manufacturer, then.

Apart from the stickers all over it, it looks nothing like a GT-R....
