We all love a hot hatch in the uk , but will an electric version prove as popular. A mini JCW seems to be one of The first offerings with reportedly 300bhp . Not to sure what the other big players are doing but this segment has to be to big to miss out on . In theory an electric hot hatch should deliver the goods with instant torque and power out of the corners , I guess weight would be an issue. I currently have a great hot hatch , and wondered how an electric version would compare . My biggest concern would be the lack of a manual gearbox . Would you buy an electric hot hatch ?

I've already got one, it's brilliant !

1,200 kg, 180 bhp, rwd, carbon tub, with a hatch at the back ;-)
I think I've got that one too ;-) although it's more like 1350-1400 KG with the later batteries anyway.

Hot hatch EV I'd have any day of the week. I've been wanting a Renault Sport ZOE since the Zoe came out and although it doesn't seem likely, the news is clear that Alpine (with help from Lotus?) will bring out an EV hatchback... given their fondness for light weight that is very encouraging and would be of real interest. Hopefully the price tag isn't toooooo premium!
What is this car you talk about ? BMW i3 ?

5 minutes to refuel is also a great plus with a petrol.
Yes agreed this issue needs to be resolved! , and I guess range although mine only does about 250 miles between fill ups and the new Yaris GR has similar problems with a small fuel tank .

I am beginning to think an electric hot hatch may actually work , as most hyper hot hatches are automatic only anyway, an electric version would be very similar in concept, dual motor /4wd and very high bhp . As others have mentioned fake engine noise is piped into ICE cars already , a good B road would be eaten up by a electric hot hatch , but would it be fun ? Minus the manual gear change it would be very different animal ,for me anyway, but my idea of a hot hatch is about 200-250 bhp and as lightweight as you can make it , which maybe some way off just yet for an electric vehicle.

I don't think an E-hot hatch could replicate something like an Integra Type R, Clio Cup or modified Fiesta ST/old Focus RS though.
Nor could they replicate the Ehatch though.

Things change. The trick is finding joy wherever you can. Too many people here look for misery everywhere they can.
Very true , if we can get a hot hatch EV then the electric future may not look so boring and bleak after all , we need a big manufacturer to have a proper crack at making something decent for us petrol heads , or would that now be electric heads ? I am more optimistic about the electric future , if Harry metcalfe thinks there ok then I may have to re- think my opinion, mind you his latest video was the £130,000 Audi RS e-tron GT , we need affordable EV’s

The only significant issue being that hatches are predominantly urban vehicles and more urban environments will probably set outright bans on ICE cars over the next decade?
That there is the only fly in the ointment I think. Otherwise I'm with you on everything you've said on this thread.
Any form of hot hatch isn't for me primarily because I think I'm now too old (42) although I had quite a few when I was younger. I've also had some pinnacle chavmobiles too - M3, Escort Cosworths, Imprezas - none of which (or the modern equivalents) I could possibly bring myself to drive now.
Ha , your definitely not old , escort cosworth a chav car ? They are all tucked away in garages and at those prices can’t be many chavs can afford them . Age shouldn’t matter drive what you want to , you would not like my hot hatch much and I’m 47 !

If there are lots of them like in every supermarket space then it works great. I do think they can be very expensive to charge from though.
I guess the ideal situation would have been to charge at a place of work funded by the employer, but that’s changed somewhat over the last year now most working from home

nope, i'll stick to proper cars with engines..i'm out
Ha yes indeed , but the engine will very soon be out also ! , buy up your ICE hot hatches now and squirrel them away for the future. I still think there will be a place for the electric hot hatch even if us old farts still prefer the petrol stuff , my 18 year old son for example don’t give a toss for ICE .
