I went to our local Tesco (Chesterfield) to fill the Riley with Momentum E5 99RON this evening - except there was none. Every Momentum pump was 'Not In Use'.

The kiosk staff said they had no idea when they'd have a delivery and when asked where else might have some (imagining they might know about supplies at nearby Tesco filling stations) the suggestion was, "Sainsbury's..."

Is this a widespread shortage or was I just unlucky? We're starting a ten-day driving tour of Wales tomorrow, some fuel would make it easier...

Just fill at Esso for ethanol free goodness
I know there are other outlets. Are they having supply problems too?

Can we focus on current supply problems please?

Or stop being a big softy and use E10.
This must be a contender for the most idiotic post on PH. Well done.
Why? Seems like loads of folk are panicking about using it in cars perfectly fine for it, switching to premium then it all sells out
In my case the car I'm wanting to fill up is a 1963 Riley One-Point-Five.

Again, could this thread be kept to current supply issues please?

There are other threads in which to debate the pros and cons of ethanol percentages and their effects.

Thank you.

Having spent an enjoyable week at the seaside with minimal car use (two trips, 15 miles in total) we set off on the second part of our holiday in the morning - a driving tour of Wales driving from Tenby via the Brecon Beacons to Builth Wells then on to Betws-y-Coed for a few days.

When we drove from home a week ago, Tesco at Llandrindod Wells had 99RON but their store at Carmarthen had none, staff saying, "We may have a delivery by the end of next week..." No matter, Crossroads Garage at Kilgetty had Shell V-Power so we're sorted for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, back home in Chesterfield, a 40 minute queue has been reported at our usual filling station with one woman stashing 12 cans in her boot - isn't there a limit on the number that can be carried in a vehicle?

Today's top tip.

Type petrol stations into google maps. If you see any red lines for traffic jams, you know they've got fuel. Checked it yesterday and it works.
I don't know, people just like to queue even if there's no point.

Like people who join the back of a long queue in the left hand lane at traffic lights when the lane next to it is completely empty.
There was a bit on the news earlier about Police having to deal with about 100 people queuing for up to 3 hours at a petrol station - that was actually closed because it had been vandalised during the night - muppets.

Edit - did a search and found a link - other news sites are available / also covered it.

Derbyshire, it would have to be in Derbyshire...

I drove past a local Esso filling station in Chesterfield (opposite the Donkey Derby for those who know the area) a couple of hours ago.

All the pumps were out of action, some taped off, others with physical obstructions e.g. trolleys of packaging in front of them. This is in East Midlands where, so I've read, there are no supply problems.

Went to Tesco Chesterfield last night. 50% of the Momentum 99 pumps are working.
Thanks though I shan't need any for a while as the car will be laid up over the winter.

What about other 99 RON fuels from other company's?

What are the alternative makes/brands of 99 RON fuel that I could use instead of V Power?
V-Power (99 RON)
Tesco Momentum/M99 (99 RON)
Esso Synergy Supreme+ (99 RON)
Gulf Endurance (99 RON)
Costco Super (was 99, regrettably now 97 RON)
BP Ultimate (97 RON)
Sainsbury's/random brand super (97 RON)

I hope that helps.
This is very useful, but how did you find all of that? I've just found there's a Gulf station 15mins from me now, just gave them a call and they have super unleaded smile

Edit - it's E5 but only 97 RON. I'm mainly concerned RE E10 so all good smile

Tesco Momentum and Esso Synergy Supreme+ are the only widely available (usually) 99RON alternatives to V-Power.

Thanks for this. Is there any preference between the three? I think I read that the Esso is essentially ethanol free...?
Esso is ethanol-free in most areas otherwise the difference is in the additives and price. Having used all three fuels in my A8 and in my Riley I haven't noticed any difference in economy or performance. Recently it's been a case of filling up with what's available locally but I'll be returning to Momentum eventually.

Do you notice any different in your A8 between 95 and 99?
It's been SORN'd for a while but my entirely unscientific seat-of-pants told me it was more responsive on 99.

Travelling 250 miles tomorrow, got to drop someone off at 225 miles, place I want to stop at has a Tesco and Shell within 200m of each other at 215 miles away, trip computer showing 240 miles......Might at least phone the Shell beforehand to see if they at least have VPower. Will try for Momentum first, mind.
I tried to do much the same on a recent trip to Pembrokeshire; make pit stops at Tesco filling stations e.g. Chesterfield > Llandrindod Wells > Carmarthen (tank range is approx. 200 miles). The last had none when we called but the Shell filling station at Kilgetty had V-Power on the three times we needed to fill up and Tesco at Carmarthen had been resupplied before our return trip. No problem at Llandrindod Wells either and whilst in north Wales it was V-Power or nothing.

I paid 159.9 for VPower today. weeping
Odd that, isn't it? They pour in 5% less ethanol yet charge more. irked

It's a pity relatively few drivers were able to benefit from those prices, I never did... frown

Within 20 miles of me (Chesterfield) I can buy Tesco 99RON momentum for 173.9p at my local store rising to 176.9p at Clay Cross and Hucknall or falling to 165.9p at Ilkeston - a variation of 11p per litre (prices are a maximum of three days old according to the Petrol Prices app.)

The Hucknall and Ilkeston filling stations are 9.2 miles apart. Can anyone find a greater variation in less distance?

I'd assume that Ilkeston price is a mistake. It should probably be 165.9 for 95 and +7p for 99.
That's possible I suppose. Another one is 168.9, two are 170.9, three are 172.9; mostly recent additions to the database.
