Today as the pump slowed to a crawl then clicked off at £99 with nearly 20 litres of tank still empty I was contemplating whether I would leave it there or do a second round. I don't have many miles to do in the near future and there was a queue so i opted to leave with my car wondering why it was still thirsty.

Even now, a lot of new cars have 60+ litre tanks and pretty much everything Mondeo-sized and larger used to come with a tank of 60-100 litres (I bet people here can name cars with even bigger tank options). With petrol now around £1.40-1.60 a litre depending on locale and grade that £99 often isn't enough to fill a fuel tank.

Does anyone know if any garages/chains have already raised the limit, or if they have plans to?

My Silver Shadow takes 107ltrs.
If my great uncle's similarly-engined Silver Spirit was anything to go by, that must be good for about 300 miles range biglaugh

Love that old six-and-three-quarter.

Is this a real issue?
Even at 20mpg that's nearly 300 miles of range..
Don't get me wrong, it's hardly life-or-death if I have to drive away without a full tank or pop my card in again for a second fill, but as I don't really enjoy going to petrol stations I generally want to fill up as infrequently as I can (whilst still enjoying the car - so no hypermile stuff).

Every PHer needs to be ready for a 700 mile non-stop journey at an instant notice.
Well that was certainly in the T&Cs when I signed up to PH, right below the bit about keeping a goatee beard on my person at all times.

Could you wait for the first pump to be free, fill to the £99 limit then pull forward to another pump and use that one again? I'ds imagine your card company/bank might get a little suspicious?
You can use the same pump immediately after. Never had any problems doing this at Tesco.
This. Just replace the pump and then start again.
It's what I end up doing. When I first had to do it (probably 5 years ago) it sometimes caught others out who (quite reasonably) thought that replacing the nozzle meant I was finished, but it's only happened to me twice in recent memory. Possibly because so many cars now need a double-dip, it's just expected.
